Poll Hints Bush Immigrant Plans Unpopular

WASHINGTON -- More than half of Americans oppose President Bush's plan that would allow some illegal immigrants to stay for several years to work jobs U.S. citizens don't want, a poll indicates.

Just over half, 55 percent, said they oppose the plan, while 42 percent favor it, according to a CNN-USA Today-Gallup poll out Monday.

By a 2-1 margin, those in the poll said immigrants hurt the economy by driving wages down for many Americans rather than help the economy by providing low-cost labor. In 2000, people were split on that question.

When people were asked whether the United States should make it easier for illegal immigrants to become citizens, 74 percent said no - up from 67 percent in August 2001.

The poll of 1,003 adults was taken Jan. 9-11 and had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Actually, it was a telegram. Europe has long lusted for America's spacious skies and amber waves of grain . .

So has Mexico.

No study of codes and ciphers would be complete without a quick look at the famous German “Zimmerman” telegram. In short, Germany proposed a military alliance with Mexico; if she joined, Mexico could “regain” its lost territories from the United States. The Kaiser and the German High Command agreed and Germany sent a two-part telegram to its Embassy in Mexico City. Germany used a code system it numbered as “0075”. This system contained upwards of 10.000 phrases and individual words. One codebook was required to transmit the message, another book to decode a message. Secure enough, the Germans thought.

But Britain had an ace up its sleeve - Room 40 OB (Old Block) and Captain William Hall. In short, Captain Hall and his staff worked hard and decoded the Zimmerman telegram and the rest is now history.

I think bush might have outsmarted himself with this plan.

On first hearing, my wife and I about had a litter of kittens over it. I saw it as a blatant, and misguided attempt to buy votes.

However, on second review. Registering illegals, making those in the country pay a fee (fine), and giving them 3 years to work before they have to return home (the renewal subject to political approval). The plan really is brilliant. It's not defacto Amnesty, but defacto deportation. If the Gubnant gave 3 year amnesty to gun owners if they would only come forward and get finger printed and recorded..with that amnesty subject to renewal...we would have Travis McGee's CWII starting.

The bottom line is, we have 8 Million illegals in the country, and many parts of our economy rely on them as a means to circumvent minimum wage and payroll taxes. They are a black market labor market with no controls (other than organized crime), they don't pay taxes yet live on the dole, they operate outside of labor laws, and they have defacto amnesty simply by overloading law enforcement.

Bush's plan solves all of the above. The employers will have to pay into Social Security, the worker could be taxed, and we get to track them in our own country. After 3 years, they will have an incentive to return to their country of origin in order get another 3 years legitimate work. They will return at THEIR own expense, not ours through deportation. It gives us, through congress, the tools necessary to combat the problem.

Unfortunately, the conservative base is not seeing this. In that sense, it is a political failure.

As for our borders, I wish he would start defending them.

Bush is running around at the Mexican summit peddling our southern (and even our northern) borders like a pimp sells a cheap whore in the streets of Juarez.

And your point is? You repeatedly refer back to this thread. I thought Dead Dog made some very good points. While I think there should be more penalties for illegal acts, I was hoping some constructive dialog would emminate from Dead Dog's post. There are very few workable, doable suggestions in any of these Immigration threads. Could it be that the answer is not as easy as most Freepers think?

Here is a great solution to the illegal immigration problem. If a non agricultural business has illegals hired it should have 6 mos to either help them become citizens at company expense or fire them or pay a large fine. The fine should be compounded yearly.

We can never stop the problem unless there are not any jobs for those who cross the border illegaly. Bush should make it unprofitable to hire illegals.

The 55% against it probably are 90% of those who actually know anything about it. The other 45% probably don’t know anything about it or do not pay attention to anything political.

I still this could easily be a setup where Bush proposes it but it will never pass Congress for a variety of reasons. Bush can say “See, I tried” and the issue will be stuck in grid lock for (hopefully) a long time.

Including me there are eighteen usually activist Republicans in my immediate to close circle of friends and aquaintances who already send in checks made out for Zero Dollars and Zero Cents and who will neither support a federal Republican nor vote for one for as long as President Bush's criminal reward for criminal alien invaders is on the table.

As things stand, that's nineteen votes that I know of that the "opposition" doesn't need to dig up.

And, speaking of the opposition, God knows that the last time around the bastards sprung from prison, imported from the third world, granted "citizenship" to and dug up enough dimpled chads to create the illusion of having won the popular vote.

Putting aside the facts that illegal immigration is wrong and rewarding illegal immigration is also wrong and encourages more illegal immigration, do you honestly believe the illegals will happily "register", pay fines, and promptly leave the country after 3 years?

The plan is stupid at best.
