City to retract release calling Free Republic a 'hate group.'

Fresno will pay $60,000 to conservative online forum Free Republic and retract a news release that called the organization a "hate group," according to a settlement agreement released Monday. Free Republic founder Jim Robinson, who lives in Fresno, said he wouldn't have filed the suit if the city had acknowledged its error.

"I think it's unfortunate the city did not retract and apologize immediately after they knew they were in the wrong," Robinson said.

City Attorney Hilda Cantu Montoy said the lawsuit was settled to "avoid the expense and burden of litigation."

"It's not in any way admitting any liability by any party," Montoy said.

The Southern Poverty Law Center also classifies FR as a hate group.

Is that true? I went to their site a few months ago when all this broke out and they did not have us listed then.

Something about a billion dollars here, a billion dollars there ... pretty soon you're talking about some REAL money.

Who was it, G. Gordon Liddy said that ??
Or was it Will Rogers?

"A billion here, a billion there, pretty soon, you're talking real money".

Usually attributed to Sen. Everett Dirksen (R-IL), Senate minority leader, 1957 until his death in 1969.

Sen. Dirksen proved his political accumen by beating the Senate Democrats to pass the Civil Rights Act in 1964, and by his political philosophy: "I am a man of fixed and unbending principles, the first of which is to be flexible at all times."

I'll have to leave that determination to Jim's good offices. G*d knows he deserves it.

(Of course, my .257 WM Weatherby Mark V COULD use a nice Leupold scope ...) :)

from the thread about the resignation of Debbie R:
"It's cheaper to pay these guys $20 and get rid of them than waste an attorney's time on them," Castillo said.
I guess that's just another slam again Free Republic, and of course, against all of us.
