Powell Defends U.N. Speech Linking Iraq to WMDs
American Forces Press Service ^ | Jan. 8, 2004 | By Gerry J. Gilmore

Secretary of State Colin Powell today defended his Feb. 5 assertions before the United Nations Security Council that Saddam Hussein's Iraq possessed and was hiding weapons of mass destruction in defiance of numerous council resolutions.

"The fact of the matter is Iraq did have weapons of mass destruction and programs of weapons of mass destruction, and used weapons of mass destruction against Iran and against their own people," America's senior diplomat told reporters at a press conference here.

In his U.N. speech given just weeks before the start of the U.S.-led military campaign that ousted the former Iraqi dictator, Powell cited Saddam's repeated failure to jettison his WMDs in compliance with Resolution 1441, passed by the U.N. Security Council on Nov. 8, 2002.

Although U.S. and coalition efforts to locate WMDs in post-Saddam Iraq have so far turned up empty, Powell noted that the David Kay-led WMD survey group in Iraq has yet to complete its work.

Powell emphasized he was "confident of what I presented" before the United Nations last year regarding Iraq's WMDs. Information contained in his presentation, he pointed out, included data from the nation's intelligence community which has also been briefed before members of Congress.

"This game is still unfolding," Powell said regarding the ongoing mystery of what Saddam did with his WMDs.

I still laugh when I remember some people thought Powell was actually waving a vial of Anthrax around.

Those who know me here know that I am not the unreasonable type but just once, I would like to share a rumour I have been hearing.... WMD's have been found. They were in either some athletic center or in a secret storage center in the Euphrates River... Included were weapons of French Design that are bio/chem weapon capable... This information has been used by the state department to acquire concessions from the French, Germans, and others as they are proof that these countries violated the weapons ban and sanctions. Please understand that this is just a rumour but if anyone has heard anything, I would appreciate a reply... Allegedly, this info concerning WMD's has been given to certain Senators to silence their opposition and the information will be made public at at a "politically convenient" time....

I don't know if this is true... Just some things I have been hearing from a few different places...

If that were true, it would be a tremendous backfire as the opposition that had up to then been "silenced" would be able to say "the President has had this information for months but has kept it secret until he could use it for political advantage." Sorry, I don't think the WMD caches have been located yet, but when they are it will be oh so sweet to see the dems squirm even more.

Syria will probably be the next shoe to drop, and when they cave, you'll see others fall like dominoes.

The part that seems more plausible to me is that the info is being held back (if true) to acquire concessions from Germany, France, etc.... I have thought for quite sometime that even if WMD's are never found, there is a general feeling (more than not) that if Saddam Hussein is gone, so what... In other words, not a significant problem... And it is not a hard sell that getting rid of him was in our national interests. Outside the US, we will take a PR hit, but other than that, no major pain...

And if bin Laden is caught, then the WMD discussion will go away for good...

Just in case the rumour is true, I have noticed Rockefeller has not been saying much... I have also notice in the Democratice Debates that the reasons we went into Iraq may be shaky but few are stating "Where are the WMD's?"...

Well, you know what the blind man said... "We will see..."

Saddam WAS a WMD, ping!

Shall we ask the victims buried in the mass graves? Those acts silently covered up....by the same accusers.

Enough, from our outrageous left!

Well if true- it would mean GWB is a criminal and should be impeached, removed from office, and imprisoned if not executed as a Traitor. But I happen to think Bush is not a Clinton and would never play poltics for his own personal political benifit with the WMDS.

Ragtime, I admire your total loyalty to this Iraqi endevour. It does have- at least- noble intentions and can be argued to be within our interests.

But you post this:

Enough, from our outrageous left!

And then post a link almost 3 years old about how Clinton and Cohen were saying Iraq was violating this or that. Any updates on that?

I agree - enough from the outrageous left- no more posts from the lying era of Clinton.

I posted the link, because the press never brings up this report put together by SOD Cohen and co. as they exited the White House, the article put out by the NY Times 2 DAYS after Pres. Bush's inaugeration....claiming that the scientists, machinery and resources could be up and running to make WMDs in a very short time...not 45 minutes, but that's a silly accusation. 45 minutes...two weeks...IMMINENT threat.

With all the Joe Wilson nonsense and the BBC nuttiness over the 45 minute claim, even the suicide of the original reporter...not ONE of this dishonorable bunch of big time "reporters" brought up the similar warnings made by the departing Clinton Defense Department...and sometimes their hypocrisy needs to be held up. Today was such a day, imho.

Saddam proved repeatedly that he not only had no qualms about using WMDs on innocents, he was forever scheming to obtain them.

Click on the story link, check out YAHOO's/DNC's latest effort to delegitimize the war: a "news" page from today's YAHOO Iraq NEWS.. lead stories being pushed by America's FREE press in every major TV and hometown paper across the country, around much of the world... a compilation of pure DNC, anti-Bush spin disguised as "news" re. WMDs and reports from the left-wing Carnegie Foundation about imminent threats.

This press and pals crossed the line long ago with their dishonest coverage, but THIS new campaign is low, even for them.

Carnegie, Yahoo, AP and the DNC are attempting to silence Saddam's victims even now, ignoring the loved ones of our brave casualties they exploit daily to undermine morale at home, and abroad. Any spin that excuses Saddam, and pretends he didn't pose a clear and present danger to the civilized world, ignores the mass-murder of children, and the sacrifices of our troops, and the suffering of the Iraqi people, and the financing of terrorists.

To the press/DNC/Carnegie Saddam apologists who would excuse suffering on this massive scale for personal political gain, there is nothing left to say.

This is war.

Yes- on that we agree.

I think just about everything from the Clinton era was a lie- including almost all of the intel on Iraq that Bush had to rely on and now has to back peddle on. Madeline Albright said that 500,000 Deaths of Iraqi children due to our sanctions was a price she would pay. This is the same woman who launched the phoney Kosovo war. I just don't trust one thing that is tainted with stink of Clinton- including everything about Iraq that his intelligence "gathered". This is the same man who bombed an Aspirin plant in Sudan on the most rudimentary and raw intel reports and had the backing of no one in intel or defense when he did it!
