What is a "Temporary Worker"? Is that a new euphemism for illegal immigrant? Will people here illegal be eligible?

This is what infuritates me the most. He is equating illegal immigrants with my great-grandparents who came through Ellis Island!

I read that the first time.
My reading comprehension skills are quite up to snuff, thanks.

I think you meant "vitriol", by the way.
Or perhaps vitrOLÉ?

;)

American citizens not willing to take jobs.

What jobs are American citizens not willing to take?

American citizens are fast food workers, field workers, custodians, refuse collectors, food processors, etc. Would people prefer a better job? Sure, but they will take those other jobs if those jobs pay a living wage.

The 'citizens not willing to take' is a bunch of political BUNK.

It is just a matter of bending over for the Dems socialistic expansion of health and social programs or bending over for the Pubbie cheap labor. Either way, the average American taxpayer is going to pay for the difference between cheap foreign labor and their health/social care.

I agree..I have not heard ANYTHING bad in this. Honestly.

With all due respect, I don't think you understand the epochal implication of this for government spending and demographics

And that would make my orange juice very very pricey!

What do you do for a living?

Are you an office worker?

Are you a doctor, scientist, government worker?

Let's invite illegal immigrants to do your job for a fraction of your pay--no reason for your work product to be so pricey.

Did you listen to the speech? It doesn't sound like you did. He said this program requires these TEMPORARY workers to return to their country when the work is done. IT IS NOT a fast track to citizenship, BUSH MADE THAT CLEAR. He wants STRICTER requirements for citizenship, hence bringing in the people you're talking about. It's THE SKY IS FALLING around here, as usual.

Perceptions of the moment aside, the net result will be seen as time goes by. It's a very strong position.

Illegals aren't immigrants, they're tresspassers and burglars.

This is also worth repeating.

Ummm...Bush just slapped the ever living crap out Americans who are looking for work...any kind of work. The comment about jobs we won't do was just astoundingly bad.

Bush is doing nothing more than reiterating the original immigration laws of this country. Laws which have never been enforced and have gotten further and further from Americanizing immigrants.

EXCELLENT POINT Saber!

I've stayed away from these threads until the actual plan was announced. I still don't know what to think. Vicente Fox makes me absolutely sick, what with his demands that we provide work for his citizens all the while not doing anything about the corrupt government of Mexico. Arrrrgghhhh!

So, I'm still thinking about this whole issue but at this point, I'm leaning against it. California is a shambles in large measure due to the illegals overrrunning the state. Allowing them to get a green card doesn't seem to be helping the problem at all.

The proposal as stated puts the illegals being given a chance at a work visa *behind* those who have gone through the proper method. They have to register, pay a fee, and then leave after a period of time. In the interim they can no longer be paid sub-minimum wage.

Effectively this *raises* the cost of employing those people, which makes their labor less attractive to employers.

IMO this all hangs on enforcement against employers who afterwards elect to employ illegals.

He is now applauding their illegal entry and how "brave " they were.
Say WHAT?!

Yep He talked about their brave entry into this country through the desert risking death to get here.

I have a relative that really risked his life defending the southern border

Enough is enough ..these law breakers were brave to face our Border Patrol . Want to vomit with me
