The Making of the Money Shot

January 6, 2004

Did any of you wonder, when you saw this photo of Howard Dean and Bill Bradley Tuesday in Iowa, how the diminutive Dr. Dean, who claims to be 5'8" and three quarters (footnote), appears the same size as the 6'5" former NBA star? We did too.

Well the images below, grabbed from CNN's coverage, show us how this feat was pulled off with some skillful platform use. Click the panels for larger images or watch the clip we've provided to see what's afoot. (Video Only: High Speed || Low Speed)

In the first frame, Bradley is speaking - and you'll notice that he's standing on a platform, while Dean watches far in the background. When Bradley introduces Dean, they switch places. Dean steps up, and Bradley steps down.

These series of images show, from behind, how their position switch puts them at relatively equal height.

Having duped their willing accomplices in the media and (they think) all of you idiots in America, they turn for the money shot - and suddenly the vertically challenged Democrat front-runner is as tall and imposing looking as the former NBA superstar endorsing him.

Watch the video...

(...of Dean and Bradley pulling off some visual deception)

*** Footnote

"Chatting with reporters on his campaign jet recently, Dean complained about a New York Times story that had described him as 'diminutive.' Dean first noted that the Times reporter, Adam Nagourney, is 'about five-three.' Then he added, 'I don't know that I'm so short.' Well, a reporter asked, how tall are you? 'I'm five-eight,' Dean replied. 'Almost five-nine.' Dean probably should have stopped here, but he didn't. 'Five-eight and three-quarters,' he continued. 'The reason I don't tell anybody about the three-quarters is that it sounds like I'm very sensitive about my height. And I'm not.' Where would anyone get that impression?"

"The Bush Team had a secret "Plan B" that, had the diminutive Dukakis insulted the 6'+ Bush too much or scored too many "points", the latter would step out from the podium and walk over to stand side-by-side with tiny Mikey, in a symbolic "challenge". The electorate could make their own conclusions."

Algor tried this in the '00 debates with W. Remember W's bemused nod of acknowledgment? Made Gore look like a big-assed bird, standing there without a forest to blend into.

If someone can grab a clean shot of Bradley at the podium, and put it side by side with Dean in the same spot, you can use the stripes on the flag to line them up and get a side by side shot. If you can do it seamlessly, that would be cool.

Or you could just use Photoshop to create the image in your mind:

Has Rush really been reduced to complaining about creative use of podium risers? SOP for these kind of events is to try to keep everybody looking about the same height. Big whoop.

It's not about Israel either... anyone know why this is showing up with Israel as a topic?

It also has Japan as a topic. Why, I have no idea.

Dean probably doesn't appreciate Rush writing about his shortness. I could care less, but this is another example of why Democrats and prosecutors in Florida are salivating about paying Rush back for being a druggie. This article is a meaningless, unnecessary, gratuitous attack.

It just seems to me that his attacks used to be at least interesting. Hitting them for a minor use of stagecraft is like complaning about actors using tape to know where to stand.

How right you are, and Democrats are going to make Rush squirm and suffer for being a druggie because, as you know, payback is a b*tch.

And of course now the Dems have an excuse to hammer on any minor piece of stagecraft Bush uses during the election. What a brilliant plan.

Some may not realize how important the height angle is, pun intended. I recall in the 80s reading that the taller candidate always wins. Big issue.

When Pres. Bush came to my area in 2000, I shook his hand at the Holiday Inn in Bethlehem, PA. Our current pres is of average height, not tall. I went to see his father, the former pres, speak at Muhlenberg College during the campaign. The former pres is a VERY TALL person.

I also went to Rush's tv show in NYC back in the early 90's, and he's of average height. People cannot help how tall or short they are; it's irrelevant.

Reviewing the pictures I've discovered another diabolic deception by those dastardly Democrats (alliteration courtesy of Stan Lee, comic books rot the mind indeed): they've carefully selected ties that pull color from the flag being used as a backdrop thus keeping them from clashing and looking out of place. Somebody send this info to Rush right away!

Ever since the McNabb incident I'm having a harder and harder time taking Rush seriously. Not that I disagreed with him, but he promised to keep politics out of it and failed, that really disappointed me. And most of his actions since (at least the ones that pinged on my radar) have continued in that direction.

IMO, his judgement is screwed up, as well as his life in general.

I think that's kind of a dumb thing to care about. It makes Rush sound small (pun intended).

It was just a side commentary. Its just something he observed. He didn't spend 2 hours talking about. If you had listened today you would have noticed that he spent 2 hours on immigration.
