IMPORTANT NOTICE

Jim Robinson has received notice for the legal firm representing the USO.
They are demanding that Free Republic discontinue using "USO" or "USO Canteen"
on Free Republic and remove all references to the "USO" trademark, logos, etc, from Free Republic.

I have been in touch with Jim and this is what we have come up with.

"Free Republic Canteen" is acceptable.
"FReeper Canteen" in the title of the thread and "FR Canteen" in the small graphics and banners.

Nothing has changed with the the Canteen EXCEPT for the "new graphics"
AND we can now "discuss" politics.
As you recall the USO forbids political discussions.

I do ask that we keep the politics to a minimum since the purpose of the FR Canteen is:

FR CANTEEN MISSION STATEMENT
Showing support and boosting the morale of
our military and our allies military
and the family members of the above.
Honoring those who have served before.

Well, let's not mis-characterize this. The USO lawyer and his letter are actually pretty gracious about this situation. They've agreed that "Free Republic Canteen" is an acceptable name for the thread.

I will continue to support the USO as I have always done, even before there was a Canteen. They have done a world of good for me personally. If it is proven to be more than just a copyright infringement then my support will go elsewhere.

Somebody emailed me and asked where I have been. I have been trying to find some no fat, no cholesterol lard. Since Miss Fawnn is being so demanding these days. All you men know what I'm talking about. When a woman goes on a diet everybody suffers. Miss Fawnn you need you some double chocolate fudge brownies with pecans on top. I gowrontee you will love any kind of lard then. I won't have to go to the ends of the earth looking for that low fat stuff.

Tonk good job. We will support you in all you do. You have worked too hard to support the troops for this to go away. What's in a name anyway?

That's a shame. I was a 'customer'...and sent others.

Over 2 years worth of daily Canteen threads and the XXX just now discovered how much you were doing to help the troops daily ~ voluntarily, as a Veteran and one who still serves?

We know where your heart is in the Canteen...with the troops, first.

How can we remove every last mention of XXX from our threads? What's next from the XXX? The removal of Under God from the Pledge? Concern for the welfare of Saddam Hussein while in US military custody? *sigh.*

I hate to see anyone take this out on the USO. We were all under the impression we had permission. Here is one thread that explains why we believed that. Jim was mislead it looks like. Please don't take this out on the USO it is not the USO's fault.

This is a very Special thread today. It is a Tribute to Billie from all of us at the USO Canteen FReeper Style.

When the attacks on America happened on 9-11. Timeout, a dear FReeper, mentioned how nice it would be to have a USO at FR. The next day I called the main headquarters of the USO and spoke with the President. I was told how their purpose was never political and how if I wanted to do a USO it would have to be done in such a way that would be our own thing. I told him about Free Republic and how our wonderful Founder, Jim Robinson was a Navy Veteran. How Freepers LOVE America and appreciate our military.

I suggested to call it USO Canteen FReeper Style and he was thrilled. We had the go ahead.

Next I contacted Jim Robinson to ask for permission to have a running thread and told him what it was to be about. He agreed with his blessings.

There was only one person that I just knew would be so perfect to do the opening art work for the thread and better yet to be my partner, your other hostess for the Canteen.
