IMPORTANT NOTICE
Jim Robinson has received notice for the legal firm representing the USO.
They are demanding that Free Republic discontinue using "USO" or "USO Canteen"
on Free Republic and remove all references to the "USO" trademark, logos, etc, from Free Republic.
I have been in touch with Jim and this is what we have come up with.
"Free Republic Canteen" is acceptable.
"FReeper Canteen" in the title of the thread and "FR Canteen" in the small graphics and banners.
Nothing has changed with the the Canteen EXCEPT for the "new graphics"
AND we can now "discuss" politics.
As you recall the USO forbids political discussions.
I do ask that we keep the politics to a minimum since the purpose of the FR Canteen is:
FR CANTEEN MISSION STATEMENT
Showing support and boosting the morale of
our military and our allies military
and the family members of the above.
Honoring those who have served before.

He really enjoys it and will be going to NASA in the next couple of weeks. He's excited about that because he's really into the MARS Exploration coverage.
Oh Great news about Bobby. I am so glad he is interested in the Mars Rover. My gosh I watched C Span the other night, it was so exciting.

I have two kids who just enlisted in the army, and you are worried about this crap? I thought this was a place millitary people could come for support. Some support. All I see is bitching and moaning. Thanks, but no thanks. If this is what this canteen is about, remove me from your ping list. I'll have nothing to do with it. My kids are serving to protect you. I could care less about your petty grievances.

Todays Medal of Honor Recipients BARFOOT, VAN T.
Rank and organization: Second Lieutenant, U.S. Army, 157th Infantry, 45th Infantry Division.
Place and date: Near Carano, Italy, 23 May 1944.
Entered service at: Carthage, Miss.
Birth: Edinburg, Miss.
G.O. No.: 79, 4 October 1944.
Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty on 23 May 1944, near Carano, Italy. With his platoon heavily engaged during an assault against forces well entrenched on commanding ground, 2d Lt. Barfoot (then Tech. Sgt.) moved off alone upon the enemy left flank. He crawled to the proximity of 1 machinegun nest and made a direct hit on it with a hand grenade, killing 2 and wounding 3 Germans. He continued along the German defense line to another machinegun emplacement, and with his tommygun killed 2 and captured 3 soldiers. Members of another enemy machinegun crew then abandoned their position and gave themselves up to Sgt. Barfoot. Leaving the prisoners for his support squad to pick up, he proceeded to mop up positions in the immediate area, capturing more prisoners and bringing his total count to 17. Later that day, after he had reorganized his men and consolidated the newly captured ground, the enemy launched a fierce armored counterattack directly at his platoon positions. Securing a bazooka, Sgt. Barfoot took up an exposed position directly in front of 3 advancing Mark VI tanks. From a distance of 75 yards his first shot destroyed the track of the leading tank, effectively disabling it, while the other 2 changed direction toward the flank. As the crew of the disabled tank dismounted, Sgt. Barfoot killed 3 of them with his tommygun. He continued onward into enemy terrain and destroyed a recently abandoned German fieldpiece with a demolition charge placed in the breech. While returning to his platoon position, Sgt. Barfoot, though greatly fatigued by his Herculean efforts, assisted 2 of his seriously wounded men 1,700 yards to a position of safety. Sgt. Barfoot's extraordinary heroism, demonstration of magnificent valor, and aggressive determination in the face of pointblank fire are a perpetual inspiration to his fellow soldiers.
BARRETT, CARLTON W. Rank and organization: Private, U.S. Army, 18th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division.
Place and date: Near St. Laurent-sur-Mer, France, 6 June 1944.
Entered service at: Albany, N.Y.
Birth: Fulton, N.Y.
G.O. No.: 78, 2 October 1944.
Citation: For gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty on 6 June 1944, in the vicinity of St. Laurent-sur-Mer, France.
On the morning of D-day Pvt. Barrett, landing in the face of extremely heavy enemy fire, was forced to wade ashore through neck-deep water. Disregarding the personal danger, he returned to the surf again and again to assist his floundering comrades and save them from drowning. Refusing to remain pinned down by the intense barrage of small-arms and mortar fire poured at the landing points, Pvt. Barrett, working with fierce determination, saved many lives by carrying casualties to an evacuation boat Iying offshore. In addition to his assigned mission as guide, he carried dispatches the length of the fire-swept beach; he assisted the wounded; he calmed the shocked; he arose as a leader in the stress of the occasion. His coolness and his dauntless daring courage while constantly risking his life during a period of many hours had an inestimable effect on his comrades and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the U.S. Army.

Dear Tonk,
I have the need to express to you an apology.
I honestly love the Canteen. I saw that my boy was likely to come under harms way long before the war which began in March 2003.
The Canteen has been a haven for me for some time now. It has helped me to endure the stress that came with the certain knowledge that my son would be in harms way for extended periods of time.
Last March and into April, the sheite really hit the fan. I would not fabricate stories for the sake of embellishing my status here in the Canteen, or anywhere else. The fact of the matter is, my boy was very much at the point during the early days of hostilities in Iraq last Winter/Spring.
The Canteen was the only place that I could find that allowed me to somehow try and make a difference in my son's life. OMG, How I loved this site.
There were a few Freepers who had other ideas about the proper nature and purpose of the Canteen. Those people could not have known the angusish that they caused me, with their outrageous posts and behaviour in this support thread. Well, in the case that they could not know, I will point it out to them.
That is what I do. I like to get to the root of things.
That may dismay some, but I do what I do because I am highly motivated. I never lie, and I can detect BS from a great distance. I mean no offense toward any person when I project my rage. I am just a passionate guy.
Oh, and by the way,
I would never wish perdition on any person FReeper or not.
Let a certain reader take note. I am not like that.

To: Indy Pendance
The Canteen has been opened everyday since the Fall of 2001 to support our Troops.
There are some people that find it amusing to be disruptive. We do not.
The Canteen is a fun filled place for entertainment and relaxation for our Troops and their families.

I'm thankful we live in a country where I am able to raise my children and not be treated as a second class citizen just because I'm a female.
I think about the women who live in those oppressed Muslim countries and I thank God daily that I'm not living there. I also pray that God sees fit to remove the tyrants anyway He deems necessary.

You must work in a funeral parlor.
You have no idea what, Morale is about.
You have no idea what the true nature and mission of the Canteen is.
Noone can possibly believe that Troops are uplifted by viewing obituaries.
How many times do I have to tell you this simple fact?
I revere the Troops, but you are obsessed with the morbidity.

You have something against honoring our troops that have died for our freedom? You think that by not recognizing the fact that men and women have sacrificed for us that it will go away, that it doesn't happen.
And how dare you call our thread the Sheitehole. How dare you!
We honor our troops every day at the Foxhole while you all are over here playing childish games. How dare you.
I would respond to your post to me but it was pulled and no I didn't ask it be pulled, I wish it would have stayed up so everyone could see what type of person you really are.

O.K., I forgive them for not thanking Tonkin for all the business he helped send their way in the past two years, and for, instead, sending a lawyer-ly meanspirited threatening letter when a simple "please" would have sufficed. There. Over it. (they were good to Hondo1952). (^:
