Help Block The Rove Amnesty Plan In Congress, Contact These Congressmen
Pubbie | 1/04/04 | Pubbie

Fellow Freepers, we need to try to block the Bush Amnesty Proposal that is being prepared to be released on Wednesday, by Freeping the GOP members of the House Judiciary Committee:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A52647-2004Jan3.html

The gist of the Washington Post story is that Bush will propose 3 major components on Wednesday:

1) Give an amnesty to an unspecified amount of Illegal Aliens (Probably a little less than 500,000 people.)

2) Give some sort of Social Security benefits to Illegal Aliens.

3) Create some sort of Guest Worker program.

I believe that if we put enough grass roots pressure on the GOP House Judiciary Committee members (who are listed below) we can have parts 1 and 2 completely removed from any bill in the House, and have part 3 considerably watered down if a large amount of us protest by Phoning/Faxing/E-Mailing the GOP members of the House Judiciary Committee and demanding that they reject the Amnesty (Below is a list of how to contact all members of the GOP House Judiciary Committee memebers).

Now the Buchananites here on FR will no doubt say "The GOP doesn't listen to us/There is no difference between the two parties/ blah blah blah...". But they are wrong, there is considerable opposition within the House GOP to any amnesty for Illegal immigrants.

In August 2001 the House GOP was ready to rebel against the President and kill off the original Bush Amnesty proposal, until the 911 attacks buried the plan.

All GOP politicians (With the apparent exception of Bush and Rove) know very well that illegal immigrants won't vote for Republicans.

Think about it, all politicians absolutely MUST know who is and isn't going to vote for them.

The GOP has studied the 2000 and 2002 Election Exit polls in excruciating detail, and there is no evidence whatsoever that the GOP got any headway in the Latino vote in 2002. Furthermore polls show that no headway will be made by the GOP in the 2004 election.

That is why a number of major Republican politicians in November and December of 2003 have publicly said that there was major hostility to any Amnesty program within Congress.

For Example:

* Texas Governor Rick Perry said (during a meeting with Vicente Fox no less) that there was no support for any sort of Amnesty for Illegal Immigrants in Congress.

* Arizona Senator John Kyl said the McCain/Kolbe Amnesty bill, and other Illegal Immigrant bills, would be impossible to pass in 2004.

* Texas Congressman Lamar Smith (Who sits on the Judiciary Committee) said after the Ridge Trial balloon for Amnesty to all Illegal Immigrants:

"I don't see a substantial change in immigration policy in an election year," said Rep. Lamar Smith, R-San Antonio, a House immigration subcommittee member who has expressed concern that an amnesty program for illegal immigrants could harm national security."

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dallas/nation/stories/121203dnnatimmigration.76a1.html

* And Finally Tom Tancredo said in the same article:

"We have enough support on our side to stop them from liberalizing immigration law," said Mr. Tancredo, R" Colo. "And on the other hand, I don't think I have enough [support] to advance our agenda. So, that's why I think we are sort of at loggerheads."

What we Freepers need to do is, instead of voting for the Constitution Party:

1) Phone up the below members of the GOP House Judiciary Committee Members (Who are all listed below) to complain about this Amnesty plan and tell them not to pass it.

2) Fax these Congressmen to tell them to reject the plan.

3) Email these Congressmen to reject an amnesty.

If enough of us complain, it will help block the major portions of the White House's plan in the House where most Republican Congressmen are already very leary of an Amnesty plan.

PS: In your letters/phone calls/E-mails to the below Congressmen, do NOT use any vulgarity.

Regards,

Pubbie

You are conflating " legal status" with amnesty. >>>>>>>>

LOL.....I'm not....'legal status' is the *newest* terminolgy that Ridge is using in an effort not to mention the "A" word. And trying to make sense of MUCH that he says is very confusing, such as.....," Ridge added in an attempt to clarify the matter. "So you don't reward this type of conduct by turning over a citizenship certificate. You determine how you can legalize their presence". LOL...lets not reward them, but lets make them legal.

An amnesty by ANY other name is still an amnesty.

"From all reports, and per Congressman Smith's office, this plan WILL be presented by Bush on Wednesday. It WILL include SSI benefits to ILLEGAL ALIENS and their beneficiaries who have worked ILLEGALLY in the United States."

Show me.

Every report by everyone else says the exact opposite, INCLUDING the GAO. The GAO is concerned that there may some instances of payments going to people who worked here illegally, but that's it.

"Hopefully NONE!!!

But you expect Mexico to stop their citizens from entering the U.S. illegally.

Go ahead and throw in all the ad hominen attacks you wish to throw in, the bottom line is that you have ZERO information as to the nature of whatever proposal Bush may or may not make this coming Wednesday, yet, you are in here protesting SOMETHING totally unrelated.

So YOU sir, are in here spouting off talking points generated by a leftist news organization, unsourced, and without specifics in an election year.

YOU sir, are actually promoting the defeat of the GOP candidate, at a time when the only possible outcome of your efforts is the election of a liberal to the White House.

Don't call me a liberal, it's uninformed, "sky-is-falling" people such as yourself that are promoting the rise of liberalism.

Is this a stunt by Bush to ALIENate some of his core support to demonstrate something to Hispanics? Here's hoping it's some canny political move, and not a betrayal of American taxpayers, citizens, and *legal* alien residents..;.

Hello? Is this thing on?
I find it interesting/disappointing that I received several replies to my view on how to handle the invading illegals, but nothing in regards to my post giving a reality check on contacting members of congress!

That post is solid and sincere information of the type FReeper's need to forward, or print out and distribute at meetings.
Making an effort to contact congress on issues is good, making the contact effective is vital!
Ineffective contacts too often lead to resentment as the constituent does not get a reply, or otherwise see that his issue is being addressed.
Then we end up with another disillusioned and bitter former activist who gives up and mutters darkly about how all politicians are just republicrats.

We need to see some success to keep people in the fight, the more effective our efforts are the more victories we will have.

"but nothing in regards to my post giving a reality check on contacting members of congress!"

I'm told that, generally speaking, most members of Congress read their faxes, and take phone calls.

E-Mails are a bit more problematic, but that is why I encouraged people to call/phone/and fax to make sure the Congressmen get the message.

The WH doesn't listen to complaints about immigration.

You're better off phoning the Congressmen on the Judiciary Committee because that is a key Committee where the Amnesty can be blocked and there are many good Conservatives like Hostetler of Indiana and Lamar Smith from Texas.

If the Congress doesn't agree to Amnesty then the Rove plan is sunk, no matter how much the WH complains.

This is a brilliant move on Rove's part. I would encourage you to call Congress and have them get on board this plan.

" An amnesty by ANY other name is still an amnesty"

I respectfully disagree. The articles written so far, only indicate that a foreigner who applies for the guest worker program, would,at some point, be allowed to apply for citizenship. With perhaps a leg up on the regular emigree, because of their participation in the program.A guest worker program is not amnesty.I have no problem whatsoever with a guest worker program. If a guest worker plays by the rules, returns to Mexico or India or Ireland and because he has played by the rules,is then allowed to apply for citizenship-what is wrong with that ? I have common ground with you on blanket amnesty, but,so far as I can tell,no one is proposing that.My beef is that many are jumping the gun and jumping down GW's throat-based on an unsourced Washington Post article.Best to wait until the facts actually come out and then we can spar.

Bush rules out 'blanket amnesty'

By Joseph Curl
THE WASHINGTON TIMES

President Bush yesterday ruled out granting "blanket amnesty" to as many as 12 million immigrants illegally in the United States, but said he supports a policy that benefits American business owners and immigrant job seekers.
"We need to have an immigration policy that helps match any willing employer with any willing employee," Mr. Bush said in a news conference yesterday.
"It makes sense that that policy go forward. And we're in the process of working that through now so I can make a recommendation to the Congress," said Mr. Bush about the politically dicey issue — made more urgent by his planned attendance at the Summit of the Americas in Monterrey, Mexico, next month.
But the president reiterated a stance he has enunciated often: "This administration is firmly against blanket amnesty."
The president did not spell out his preferred policy. A handful of options are floating around Capitol Hill, including one co-sponsored by several Republicans who propose giving legal residency to illegal immigrants through work.
Senior White House officials have expressed support for such a temporary-worker program that would let some workers become legal immigrants, but so far the administration has not backed any single piece of legislation.
Yesterday, a White House official said Mr. Bush's comments represent no change from previous administration policy.
The president's comments come a week after Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge expressed support for giving legal status to immigrants. In Miami, Mr. Ridge said: "The bottom line is, as a country we have to come to grips with the presence of 8 to 12 million illegals, afford them some kind of legal status some way, but also as a country decide what our immigration policy is and then enforce it."
Before the September 11 attacks, the administration had begun talks with Mexican President Vicente Fox about ways to legalize more than 3 million undocumented Mexicans living in the United States. The dialogue ended after the attacks.
High-level representatives of each government reopened talks last month with a meeting in Washington, but relations between Mr. Bush and Mr. Fox have been chilly for some time.
While the two leaders met briefly in Bangkok at an international economic summit in October, lending an air of optimism to the new talks, relations soured again yesterday as Mexico accused the United States of violating international law over its treatment of 52 Mexican nationals on death row.
In a court filing, Mexico asked the World Court in The Hague to order the United States to retry the Mexicans, saying those arrested were not told of their right to consular help.
The last major legalization program in 1986, when more than 2 million illegal immigrants were granted blanket amnesty, was a failure. The move did not stem illegal immigration, but instead created an avenue for millions of new immigrants to legally enter the country to visit newly legal relatives. Many illegally overstayed their temporary visas.
With that lesson in mind, top Republican lawmakers are proposing legislation that would impose a $1,500 fine on illegal immigrants before they were granted legal residency in the United States. Those illegal entrants also would have to line up behind workers who entered the United States under a guest-worker program as they sought legal residency.
"If you do not deal with both pieces of it — those people who are here in an undocumented status, as well as those future want-to-be immigrants — all you do is create the next wave of immigrants who will come into the country illegally," Rep. Jim Kolbe of Arizona, one of three Republican authors of a comprehensive immigration-reform bill, said last week.
Another piece of legislation known as the DREAM Act would give legal and permanent status to tens of thousands of children of undocumented immigrants. The bill, whose name is an acronym for Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act, was sponsored by Sen. Orrin G. Hatch, Utah Republican. It recently passed in the Senate Judiciary Committee and is awaiting a full vote by the Senate.
In September, Democratic and Republican lawmakers jointly proposed legislation that would allow 500,000 undocumented farm workers to become legal U.S. residents. The bill is awaiting a vote in the Judiciary Committee.

Thanks for posting list of contacts. This is incredible that President Bush is preparing to award lawbreakers in such a rewarding manner. I cannot believe it. This sucks "Big Time", and what Clymers are behind all this bs?

Here we have Rush Limbaugh, a patriot, a man of great business success, a tremendous revenue generator for business and the US Treasury, being viciously persecuted and pursued by an out-of-control democrat prosecutor party hack, and President Bush wants to give illegal aliens amnesty. This is bs of the lowest order. Where is congress on this? Where is the debate? When did our country become a dictatorship under Fox?
