The bad part of just letting the UN wither is that WE still have to pay 25% of their operating costs and 60% of their aid costs. That's a pretty stiff price to pay to something that will still be around to bite our ankles.

Whose P.J. O'Rourke, and whose he a cross between? He's a cross between Rush Limbaugh & Mel Brooks.

I'll keep an eye out for that.

Bump. Steyn is quite on the money, so he has started off the New Year right again!

If you don't get anything from Free Republic other than exposure to Mark Steyn, it's worth it! He's like a cross between Thomas Sowell and P.J. O'Rourke. You are so right!! He is the best of the best.
To: Tax-chick
I think of P.J. O'Rourke as the original South Park Republican.

Those do-gooders who fret about "lawlessness" and "insecurity" in Baghdad would be better off turning their attention to the United Kingdom: the demand of Radio 4's Today listeners for the entirely reasonable right to kill burglars They should also turn their attention to their Member of Parliament who said, ""We are going to have to re-evaluate the listenership of Radio 4."

Some days the media is so full of nonsense, only Steyn assures me I have not entered a parallel universe.

He cuts to the heart of the matter, doesn't he? We're lucky to have him.

Pakistan must become a true democracy...We need it. Yeah, but it'll never happen. Pakistan is a Jihadist wasps' nest second maybe only to Saudi Arabia... Well, it might happen, if the Indians were left alone to retake this country and to convert it back to Hinduism.
It's not so wild a dream as it seems. There is a strong trend in Iran for instance to dump Islam and to return to their ancient religion of Zoroastrianism. Persians (not the mullahs) feel that their culture was in decline ever after Muslims converted them into their heathen cult (by sword, of course!).

You can't wind up the UN, but you can let it wither, and find, as the Americans and British did with Libya, ways of bypassing it that will eventually ensure it is hardly ever brought to mind for anything of consequence. That's the way to measure the health of the world in 2004.
I think Steyn should be required reading at every educational outlet in this country. Thanks again, Pokey!

>>PAK is critical in this war Pakistan must become a true democracy
Sounds like a bad idea to me. A democracy of semi-literate Koran-memorizers is not a thing to be wished for.
Agree with the first part, though.
