What I find shocking is not what the article says. I am very familiar with that.

What is shocking is the article was first published in DECEMBER 2000 and nothing has been done to correct this situation. In fact, it is worse!

In California, which has approximately four million illegal immigrants (out of 9 million-13 million nationally), illegal immigrants have destroyed a public school system that for generations was the envy of the nation. For middle-class, American parents to leave their children in such hostile environments would constitute neglect. And so, while some parents have placed their children in often expensive private schools, others have sought safe public school districts.

I can attest to that. Twenty years ago Fresno's schools were mostly white and middle class. Today, they are predominantly non-white and poor, like the kind usually found in the big cities. The middle class have fled to nearby Clovis and the Sierra foothills, leaving behind a giant slum riddled with gangs and crime.

millions of workers who have been locked out of entire industries by employers who refuse to hire Americans, or by illegal immigrant workers who will not tolerate Americans in their midst.

Legal immigrants do this too. One example being Indian and Chinese firms in Silicon valley that won't hire Americans or will screw him if they do.Plus mostly Indian and Chinese departments that will not accept an American hire.

Illegal aliens and Nafta are destroying us from via our bank accounts. Low wage jobs are being eaten up by illegals while our mid to high level jobs are being shoveled over the atlantic and pacific at a rate that will only gain steam due to competitiveness issues. Unless something is done, we're in for a collapse that will make 29 look like the opening salvo at comic relief.

The "experts" keep telling us about the jobs that will replace what we're losing. I've seen them - shopping centers and resteraunts. The only reason those jobs exist is because of the jobs we've not yet lost. Competition will force the hands of the rest of the US manufacturing companies and their support operations - they will have to either export or close up shop. The only other viable alternative is to drastically and sharply cut wages.

In short, we're in a heap of trouble and the politicians are fiddling while the fire spreads.

In Warren and Tyagi’s new book, The Two-Income Trap: Why Middle-Class Mothers and Fathers are Going Broke, they write that "The brunt of the price increases has fallen on families with children. Data from the Federal Reserve show that [after inflation] the median home value for the average childless individual increased by 23 percent between 1983 and 1998 … For married couples with children, however, housing prices shot up 79 percent—more than three times faster."

Someone help me out here. Xena's Guy and I bought a three-bedroom house last November. How does what we paid differ from that paid by a married couple with one or two kids who bought a similar house? Property value is property value, or am I missing something? (Leaving aside the assessment question, of course.)

As a Native Californian of almost 40 years; I have witnessed most everything you have stated.
How anyone can deny what is happening, must not SURVIVE (because it's not just living anymore) here, is wealthy, here illegally, or have there head up their where the sun doesn't shine.
I am not a racist, there are legal avenues/laws for entering and residing in our Country and they should be adhered to.
