Steinbrenner collapses, taken to Sarasota hospital

STAFF REPORT

SARASOTA -- New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner was in stable condition at Sarasota Memorial Hospital Saturday after collapsing at a memorial service for a friend, according to the Sarasota Fire Department.

The prominent Tampa resident and philanthropist was given an IV and an EKG test en route to the hospital, and all results were normal, according to Paul Dezzi, the fire department's assistant chief.

Steinbrenner, 73, collapsed at a memorial service for Otto Graham, a Hall of Fame quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, who died in mid December. Those present said Steinbrenner was conscious when an ambulance transported him from the service at the Church of the Palms on Bee Ridge Road.

Dezzi said Steinbrenner, who'd been placed in a room at the hospital, was talkative and was asking for the names of the paramedics who responded to the call.

Steinbrenner's collapse, around 1 p.m. during the lengthy service, might be attributed to fainting, Dezzi said. While he couldn't speak to specifics of this case, he said heat and emotion are typically two contributing causes of such collapses.

The hospital's emergency room confirmed that Steinbrenner was there but would release no further details.

I disagree. I believe it was George himself.

Disagree all you want, it was Larry David in a wig.

Starting with this episode, Larry David supplies the voice of George Steinbrenner. Steinbrenner is only seen from the back. Steinbrenner's back is occasionally played by Larry David or actor Lee Bear. Kenny "real" Kramer does a great impression of Larry David and by default does a great impression of Steinbrenner.

TVTOME

In 1989, David teamed up with comedian Jerry Seinfeld to create The Seinfeld Chronicles for NBC. The show was later retitled simply Seinfeld and became one of the most successful shows in television history. David appeared on the show many times as minor characters, including the voice of "George Costanza"'s boss, George Steinbrenner. Wikipedia-Larry David

Steinbrenner collapses, taken to Sarasota hospital.

Exactly my situation the moment I saw Joe Torre waving in Jeff Weaver to pitch against the Marlins....

I'm still trying to recover.

Maybe Torre will be on the receiving end of a delayed firing as well...

Well, the local boys (Seahawks) did the improbable and actually won a big game on the road yesterday (against SF), so now they have to hope for either a Viking or Packer loss to make the playoffs. Could happen, especially the Pack losing to Denver.

Torre's in his last year of his contract, isn't he? George (should he recover) will wait for the Yanks to fall a few games behind the Red Sox in May before canning him. Then he'll surprise everyone and make Donnie Baseball manager. That's Steinbrenner, ain't it?

I was surprised the Seahawks took care of business -- especially after falling behind 14-0 on the road to the 49s who looked great in beating up the Eagles last week.

Your homies in Seattle have a shot, don't they? I'm pulling for Green Bay, though winning in Denver is going to be tough. The Vikes aren't going to lose. It'll be interesting...
