STAFF REPORT

SARASOTA -- New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner was in stable condition at Sarasota Memorial Hospital Saturday after collapsing at a memorial service for a friend, according to the Sarasota Fire Department.

The prominent Tampa resident and philanthropist was given an IV and an EKG test en route to the hospital, and all results were normal, according to Paul Dezzi, the fire department's assistant chief.

Steinbrenner, 73, collapsed at a memorial service for Otto Graham, a Hall of Fame quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, who died in mid December. Those present said Steinbrenner was conscious when an ambulance transported him from the service at the Church of the Palms on Bee Ridge Road.

Dezzi said Steinbrenner, who'd been placed in a room at the hospital, was talkative and was asking for the names of the paramedics who responded to the call.

Steinbrenner's collapse, around 1 p.m. during the lengthy service, might be attributed to fainting, Dezzi said. While he couldn't speak to specifics of this case, he said heat and emotion are typically two contributing causes of such collapses.

The hospital's emergency room confirmed that Steinbrenner was there but would release no further details.

Actually I hope he is ok. But if for some reason he takes a turn for a worse hook him up to life support, place a TV right in front of his face and pull the plug on him only after ESPN runs highlights of Red Sox world series championship parade.

Actually, it's quite the opposite. He doesn't get a lot of press coverage for it, but behind the scenes George Steinbrenner is actually one of the most generous people you'll ever meet. Anyone who used to play for him (including many who didn't really get along with him) pretty much has an open offer to come back and work for the organization after their playing days are over.

The Sal Maglie situation also comes to mind. A few years ago Steinbrenner learned that a blind, destitute Maglie was wasting away in a Florida hospital, suffering from diabetes. Steinbrenner actually hired him as a "director of scouting" or some other position whose duties he couldn't possibly fulfill -- just to get him on the team's payroll so he could earn an income. What's important to note here is that Maglie never even played for the Yankees -- and his two former teams (the Dodgers and Giants) apparently didn't care enough about him to do such a thing.

still rememeber the old SNL skit which had him, Idi Amin and Saddam Hussein pitching "Weight Watchers." :> Classic. Hope he gets better soon though a Yankee he may be.

Actually, my favorites were the running "Weekend Update" gags on SNL during the late 80's when he was running the Damn Yankees into the ground. Every week they had a "Steinbrenner Deathwatch", in the hopes that he would keel over. Kind of morbid, but funny as hell.

And I agree with all of my fellow Red Sox fans: I want George to get better so that he can live to see the Sox win the World Series.

FYI, the Yanquis were actually born in Baltimore as the Highlanders, prior to moving to NY in about 1902 or so. Also, as you probably know, Babe Ruth was born in Baltimore in a bar which was on the location of CF prior to Memorial Stadium. Nonetheless I hate the Yanquis, like the Orioles.

Sal Maglie was known as "the barber," because he was always ready to come up and in, chin music it used to be called.

He played for the NY Giants from 1945 til 1955, then moved on to a succession of teams. He landed with the Yanquis in 1957 for a partial season and then was gone at the end of the season. In 1958, after a stint with the Cards, he returned to the Yanquis for another partial season, then retired at the end of the 1958 season.

Career 119 and 62 with a 3.15 ERA; with those stats, he'd have a much longer career nowadays.

Well, NT, I agree with you about Angelos. I got to like the Orioles back when they had wrested power from the Yanquis back in the '60's and had a boatload of pitching talent. Now they have this really neat stadium which I really enjoy although the best stadium in baseball is still Wrigley.

BTW, the Reds will probably win everything in 04, 05 and 06, maybe til the end of the decade.
