"if their intent is to kill the greatest number I'd imagine only a 'large' city would make the largest impact. "

===

Their intention is NOT necessarily to kill the maximum number of people, but the create maximum terror and kill the economy.

Attacking a small town would send a message that you are not safe anywhere -- and the attack is probably easier, because there is less security.

one thing confuses me: if indeed the "attack" is a suicide bombing(s) at shopping malls, the peak xmas period is ending today. when were they going to conduct this attack, in the middle of the day on a tuesday, or on the weekend before xmas when the malls are packed?

Going by your logic, the 9/11 terrorists should have timed their hits one hour later when more people would have arrived at their jobs. They want to maximize their casualties, but they strike where when and how they can get away with it, therefore we all are to be alert for any unusual happenings in order to help thwart any attempts. Merely concluding that if it were going to happen it would or should have happened already so the threat is over evidently is not the conclusion of those analyzing the intelligence think.

What is the point? I trust that HS does not divulge all the info they have. As it should be.

I don't mind misinformation in a time of war (like now). I do feel bad for people who take such misinformation as gospel thruth.

And don't get me started on the county folk in the most famous pork barrel state of all - WVa.

Alaska, led by Republican Ted Stevens, blows away any level of pork in West Virginia.

well, on 9/11, they were dictated by certain flights with low passenger levels that took off at certain times from certain airports. a suicide bomber with a belt can walk into a mall on Sunday, just as easily as on Tuesday.

And stop showing pictures of our airports and giving terrorists new ideas.

Do you think terrorists, or the people that give them their marching orders, are that stupid as to not think up these attacks? They can't read Tom Clancy novels?

"Ridge cannot be too specific because of these types of reactions by the terrorists."

Exactly. Some people are either in denial or totally lack common sense or both.

The terrorists are winning this "war on terror" against us, without firing a shot. We are spending millions protecting ourselves against fear. They have this country terrified and that is their goal. This color coded alert chart is nonsence. What should I do different today, with orange , or with red tomorrow. No country in the world could win a war against the USA militarily. But whoever the terrorists are, I beleive they are winning their war against the US.

With all due respect, that is absurd.

The economy is rebounding with its strongest growth in 20 years.

We defeated Iraq and captured Saddam.

Libya just gave up its WMD

Very good progress has been made against terrorist groups, with many arrested or killed.

The US is politically stable

Please get a grip, the terrorists are winning their psychological war on you, not the rest of us

It's a much different world than the 50's that I started out in.

I hear you. I keep thinking that it will never be 'green' again. We will always be on some level of alert.

Alas, I am one of those post 9/11 people, for whom the world has changed forever. It never leaves me.

"...perhaps higher..."

Pretty equivocable word, that "perhaps" word, don'tcha think? I know, you're there, I'm not.

But the way city folks keep supporting all the impositions of EnvironMental and "rural cleansing" on us rural-sexuals, I'm becoming somewhat biased, myself!!!

MSNBC said this this the first time the alert level has been raised on a weekend.

The big 5 liberal media help the terrorists enough.
They need to shut up.
Instead they give terrorists credit by getting the public worked up.
Some idiot being interviewed on FOX right now is doing his best to give terrorists new ideas.

Yes, that's exactly what I mean.

You announce that a bomb is targeting Chicago, and the terrorists drive to Detroit, Indianapolis, Joliet, Milwaukee or any of 100 other cities. Then try to find the bad guys.

Or announce that it's coming in a white van, and they switch to a red yugo or a black chevy or a whatever. Then try to find the delivery vehicle.

Far better to put everyone on alert and let law enforcement focus on the known threats (thereby keeping the terrorists guessing what we know and don't know) than it is to tip off the terrorists that we know their exact plans, allow them to alter those plans and force us into a guessing mode.

Alaska, led by Republican Ted Stevens, blows away any level of pork in West Virginia.

I said the "most famous pork barrel state" -- not the larget recipient. Every Repulican in Congess ought to be ashamed of themselves when the issue is pork. They are all pigs at the trough, particularly those Republican pigs from Neveda and Nebraska who want to spend our hard earned money fixing swimming pools and building a biosphere, respectively. Let the people in those states pay for their own toys.

The SA-7a had a slant range of 3.6 km and a kill zone between 15 and 1500 meters in altitude, with a speed of about 430 meters per second (Mach 1.4). The SA-7b has a slant range of about 4.2 km, a ceiling of about 2300 meters, and a speed of about 500 meters per second (Mach 1.75). Both the SA-7a and SA-7b are tail-chase missile systems, and its effectiveness depends on its ability to lock onto the heat source of low-flying fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft targets.

similar to the redeye ...more from FAS

A complex plan cannot be changed on a whim.

If my city is the target of a bomb, I want to know about it. For you to say the govt should hide it from me says alot about your views on the role of govt.
