Over 200,000 U.S. Embryonic Children Killed in IVF Attempts in 2002
WASHINGTON, December 18, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has released the seventh annual assisted reproductive technology (ART) report detailing the 2002 success rates for 384 fertility clinics around the country. A LifeSiteNews.com analysis of the figures reveals that over 220,000 human embryos created through the process died and only 40,687 survived to birth.
The report did not detail how many embryos died without being transferred into their mothers' wombs, nor did it detail the number of embryos which were frozen for later use or 'donated' for scientific research.
The report concerns in vitro fertilization and two related procedures. It reveals that on average three human embryos at a time are transferred to mother's wombs in the hopes that they survive the transplant and develop normally. The report indicates that there were 65,363 transfers (using on average 3 embryos each) for embryos from non-donor, non-frozen eggs, 12,700 transfers for frozen embryos from non-donor eggs, and 10,700 transfers using donor eggs.
The full report is available on the Web at http://www.cdc.gov/reproductivehealth/art.htm

Ignorance, sustained by denial is crippling this nations response to the holocaust of abortion and the growing tolerance of euthanasia.

Right here is where I part company with the anti-abortion movement.
It seems to me that 40,687 babies have been born who would not have been born without IVF.
A very high number of spontaneous abortions occur in the first few weeks of life. While IVF may produce more of these, at least we are giving children who would never have been born a chance at life now.

"A very high number of spontaneous abortions occur in the first few weeks of life. So destroying 180,000 lives to bring about 40,000 pregnancies makes it all worthwhile? Who are you, Doctor Frankenstein?

*PRAYERS* for the *CHILDREN* bump!
To: CurlyDave
I agree with you. It's one thing to intend to destroy life. It's another to fight for life, even if all of them don't make it. At least the IVF folks are trying to help life into the world. Clumsy efforts (compared to God), but they're trying.

So destroying 180,000 lives to bring about 40,000 pregnancies makes it all worthwhile? Yes. It's not like if it weren't for IVF the 180,000 would have all been born. They all would have been failed/non-fertized eggs anyhow.
Now instead of 220,000 failed/nonfertized eggs we have 40,000 children born to 80,000 happy parents

Actually, while the percentages are lower than for natural conceptions, it is estimated that 50 percent of pregnancies end in "natural" abortion or miscarriage(or stillborn.)
God kills more babies than humans do.
Flame away.

The question becomes, when does the soul enter the body? Many honorable religions preach that the soul is created in heaven possibly before conception, awaiting a viable fetus. The Almighty can't possibly be involved in creating billions of throwaway souls for the messy business of conception.

*groan* Is that a fact?
To: tkathy
I've heard the theory that the soul is developed over time, meaning that not even newborns possess one.
But you raise the point, no way God is involved in throwing away souls on billions of pregnancies. This is why I draw a line between early-term abortions and later-term abortions. I view the latter as generally abhorrent, while early ones I view as simply a fact of existence(for reference see brazil, they will happen--period. And they always have.)
There seems to be a difficulty with some on the pro-life when it comes to facing the fact that abortions of some kind will always be with us and they seem to lack objectivity when comparing late-term abortions with abortions during the embryonic stage. I actually feel insulted when compared to a fertilized egg, don't you?

Ignorance, sustained by denial is crippling this nations response to the holocaust of abortion and the growing tolerance of euthanasia.Uh, dude.
Chill.
These are newly-created lives that would otherwise never have seen the light of day. This is the exact opposite of abortion. This is not "abortion". This is "Ortion" -- the creation of new life using technology.
If some fail, that's rough, but hey. Someday we'll have a 100% success rate.
In the meantime: Valium. 20mg.

He's automated the plant. SOPSF (Soul Output Per Square Foot) is up 12% this year.

So destroying 180,000 lives to bring about 40,000 pregnancies makes it all worthwhile? Who are you, Doctor Frankenstein? How many "normal" pregnancies result in spontaneous miscarriages every year? According to your logic people who use traditional methods for becoming pregnant are guilty of destroying a life if they miscarry.
