Libya 'to give up WMD'
BBC ^ | 19/12/2003 | BBC

Libya's leader Colonel Gaddafi has said his country sought to develop weapons of mass destruction capabilities but will dismantle this programme completely, Prime Minister Tony Blair has announced. "This decision is an historic one and a courageous one and I applaud it," Mr Blair said.

Colonel Gaddafi had told him the process of dismantling the programme would be "transparent and verifiable", the prime minister said in a statement from Durham Cathedral.

The range of all Libya's missiles would be restricted to "no more then 300km, he added.

Mr Blair said Britain had been engaged in talks with Libya for nine months.

"Libya came to us in March following successful negotiations on Lockerbie to see if it could resolve its weapons of mass destruction issue in a similarly cooperative manner," he said.

From the Beeb article:

Simpson suggested that Colonel Gaddafi had been heavily influenced by a visit from Nelson Mandela, at a time when he was shunned by the rest of the world.

Oh PEEEE-YUKE! Yeah, it was Nelson Mandela's nonexistent moral authority and not Anglo-American resolve that did it. Keep telling yourself that, Mr. Simpson.

Can these people ever give Bush and Blair proper credit for anything?

Bush still can't pronounce "nulclear".

especially after reagan stood up to him and bombed the cr*p out of him.

It seems the Bush doctrine is reaping dividends we had not anticipated.

It will be interesting to see the future libyia that forms.

Reflect on what Clinton accomplished in 8 years, and what Bush has accomplished in 3 years.

Hmmm. I'm not sure that Bush has accomplished more. Clinton came into an exceptionally stable world with a huge coalition to deal with many problems, and a lot of good-will from recently freed peoples...and squandered nearly all of it.

Somewhat like comparing Carter and Reagan on the economy at the end of Reagan's second term: Reagan's policies contributed towards a 12% growth in real income during his tenure, but Carter oversaw a 17% drop.

Apparently Saddam's capture and picture in captivity made an impression upon Qadaffi and he decided that he didn't want to end up like Saddam.

GW should send a videotape of Saddam's anal exam to evey despotic scumbag dictator on earth, especially Assad, Khatami, and Jong Il. He can ask them what flavor of enema they prefer.

The politics are in high gear. This is happening on a friday. This is going to be the topic on sunday. Anything the DNC tried to get out just drowned.

Can't wait until wednesday. Anyone else have four day weekends?

According to the online Merriam Webster Dictionary, both your pronounciation and President Bush's pronounciation are acceptable. They even have a little speaker icon that you can click on and hear it pronounced each way.

Excellent point. Do you notice, however, that the way that President Bush prounounces it is the THIRD choice of three ? Educational sources usually list them in the PREFERRED accepted method.

Honestly, I can't believe that Merriam accepts that, but apparently they do. Another source doesn't grant the 'Nu-Q-lur' pronounciation, btw ...

I'll repeat my note that it is an annoyance for me. Bush isn't God, but he IS a great President, imho. (He can pronounce it 'Tewwowism' as faw as I cawe' God bless him !!

Big day for the good guys Woody. Moammar Khadafy took one look at Hussein coming out of his rathole and told his aide to please see if President Bush would speak to him.

Khadafy was financing Arafats terror activities for quite a while until President Bush convinced him of the error of his ways.

Wide reaching ramifications here my friend.

There were Israeli intel reports months ago that Saddam transferred WMD to Libya. Isn't it possible, if not probable, that Libya is expecting Saddam to tell on them now that he's caught?

I think that's what's going on here, I'd like some feedback...

Yah, I was wondering when I signed on why my AOL commie newsblurb said something like, "Libya to end banned weapons." They have to watch every word they write these days.
