Libya 'to give up WMD'

Libya's leader Colonel Gaddafi has said his country sought to develop weapons of mass destruction capabilities but will dismantle this programme completely, Prime Minister Tony Blair has announced. "This decision is an historic one and a courageous one and I applaud it," Mr Blair said.

Colonel Gaddafi had told him the process of dismantling the programme would be "transparent and verifiable", the prime minister said in a statement from Durham Cathedral.

The range of all Libya's missiles would be restricted to "no more then 300km, he added.

Mr Blair said Britain had been engaged in talks with Libya for nine months.

"Libya came to us in March following successful negotiations on Lockerbie to see if it could resolve its weapons of mass destruction issue in a similarly cooperative manner," he said.

We can't really ignore such a large trading bloc lying only 23 miles from our southern coastline, much as we'd like to. Nice thing is, with the East European nations coming in, we've got some natural allies against the Franco-German axis eg we've just concluded a deal with the Poles (my wife's Polish, so I'm all in favour of that!)

Iraq had promised to rid themselves of chem and bio weapons, and to provide proof they were doing so. Previously Libya had not - therefore Blix and the U.N. had nothing to do with inspecting.

No, you aren't. Moreover, I can't even hear this so-called mistake. I have tried to perk up and listen whenever Dubya says "nuclear" and I just don't hear anything extraordinary about how he says it. He has a slight southern accent. A lot of what he says sounds slightly different, I suppose, but I don't remark upon it.

But it's funny what will bother folks. I'm from Michigan, and I have a friend from Chicago who just goes nuts every time I say "often" because I pronounce the "t". My friend screeches, "It's pronounced 'offen'!" Whatever.

Yep... it's just like the spectacle of the Canadian prime minister appearing on t.v. last night and saying that Saddam should be tried in an international court where there is no death penalty.

I still have hope for Paul Martin.... but his mushiness does bother me. He never said a word one way or another last spring, when Chretien was deciding what to do and despite the presence of ten thousand people on Parliament Hill (including me and my two kids) begging the government to join with "our traditional allies, Great Britain and the United States," Jean Chretien instead chose to ally himself with that supporter of Quebec separatism, Jacques Chirac. After all, his son in law is a major stake holder in Total Final Elf.

Why is the "all about oil" thing used against the U.S. but never when the Left is actually interested in oil profits.

And why is "internationalism" (for the left) a "better" argument than "freedom and democracy"?

Oh yeah, back to Nelson Mandela... all I know is, when I saw pictures of Oprah Winfrey chatting with him in the "O" (meaning Oprah, LOL) magazine that my sister sent to me... it truly made me sick. Mandela has milked his prison time for all its worth.

Chemical is easy to develop, I believe Libya used them against Chad in the 80s. But let's face it, even nuclear will become more prolific as the technology becomes more widely available. And that dang internet doesn't help. :)
