On top of the vacancies, Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle (search) of South Dakota is potentially facing a formidable challenge in 2004 against former Republican Rep. John Thune (search).
Thune lost the Senate race against Democrat Tim Johnson (search) in 2002 by 524 votes. On Tuesday, he announced he was not going to seek the House seat being vacated by convicted Rep. Bill Janklow (search). Republican sources told Fox News that Thune is recruiting staff for a campaign against Daschle next year.

Thune is in - he's just holding off with an official announcement because SDers are exhausted from the Thune-Johnson race.

It's rare for party leaders to lose reelections, no? The only one I can think of is Tom Foley.

Party leaders usually represent safe political territory. No one regards South Dakota as safe 'Rat territory.

Yeah but Foley was Speaker of the House - Daschle is just Minority leader.
If he were Majority leader, then he would be very hard to beat.
I wonder if Daschle will retire? Supposedly the Democrats in DC have been saying that Daschle's heart isn't in running for reelection.

I'm sending my donation to John Thune in the morning. He is a very worthy candidate. All of you "out of staters"...please help. Any thing to help defeat Daschle.
As I have stated in previous posts....we in "west river" are strong conservatives and really want to take Daschle out. Please help us.

I wonder if Daschle will retire? Supposedly the Democrats in DC have been saying that Daschle's heart isn't in running for reelection. That is not the impression I received from his recent Booknotes interview on C-SPAN. He seemed energized and feisty enough to want to run again. When pressed he didn't even rule out a run for President in the future.
