It's rare for party leaders to lose reelections, no? The only one I can think of is Tom Foley.

Party leaders usually represent safe political territory. No one regards South Dakota as safe 'Rat territory.

Yeah but Foley was Speaker of the House - Daschle is just Minority leader.

If he were Majority leader, then he would be very hard to beat.

I wonder if Daschle will retire? Supposedly the Democrats in DC have been saying that Daschle's heart isn't in running for reelection.

I can think of one other. Bill Sasser was the Senate Democrat Whip and was going to become the Democratic Leader after the 1994 election. But Sasser didn't get pass that election because a nobody doctor named Bill Frist beat him unexpectedly.
