I'm tempted to say TB, but actually, it might have been something as simple as a bad case of the flu.

All of Van Gogh's paintings, his charcoal studies, his early works, his letters and bio are available at

"His art belongs in the flea market along with Picasso's and many, many others'."

Well, it had to happen someday....I've now seen something that you've written that I don't agree with. ;^)

It is believed by many that it was syphilis that drove him mad.

Absinthe doesn't help, either.

I'll give you $75,000 for it.

I must have its authenticity verified first, of course.

I guess I shouldn't have been so cryptic. Is this better? ;)

...however, some disreputable manufacturers added toxic chemicals to produce both the green color and the louche (or clouding) effect that in reputable brands was caused by the precipitation of the essential oils of the herbs. It is quite probable that the bad reputation absinthe developed was due to these low-grade and perhaps quite poisonous version of the real thing.

I paid a buck a piece for 10 little pen and ink Winnie the Pooh drawings. When I went to have them matted, they turned out to be originals.

I haven't done anything with them, they just sit in plastic sleeves for now.

Can be. Some of the adulterants are known to cause irreversible brain damage.

Someone who knows that it is really worth much more than that.

And how was that price arrived at? "Hey, I'll give you $1800 for this worthless little picture you're selling for $48 bucks. And that's my final offer!"

How utterly cool!

Can't win 'em all 8-)

Paul Johnson's new book Art: A New History got a great review in NR. I know he's always been down on Picasso, particularly for his personal life, which appeals to me. I'm a reflexive iconoclast when it comes to the leading figures of Modernism. But Paul even tackles sacred cows like the Impressionists. Apparently, he's a Vermier guy, which sounds good to me. I'm looking forward to reading his book. At $25, the price is pretty reasonable for a 700+ page hardbound book.

Although Paul's known as a historian, his father was a professional painter who recommended that Paul not follow in his footsteps because he saw the hand writing on the wall.

There's a lot about Theo Van Gogh on Google; unfortunately most of it is in Dutch.

But if I recall this correctly from art school and various books, Theo died of syphilis. He'd had it for years and years, supposedly.
