SADDAM HUSSEIN CAPTURED
Former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has been captured in his home town of Tikrit, according to reports.
There has been no independent verification of the news but Sky New's Foreign Editor Tim Marshall says the source of the news is usually reliable.
The US Defence Department says it has had no confirmation of the claims, which come from Iraqi Kurd leader Jalal Talabani, says the Iran news agency IRNA.
Hundreds of exultant people have taken to the streets of Kirkuk, firing weapons into the air in celebration.
A press conference has been announced for 12pm GMT.
In Baghdad, a spokeswoman for the US-led operation notified reporters that a "very important" announcement will be made at the press conference.

I am so glad you're here.
I'd love to be where you are ~ to share this moment, hug and shake the hand of everyone ~ not to get in the way tomorrow. *g*
It's going to be very difficult for any press, Ba'athists, or terrorists to cover up the opinion of the Iraqi people, now that Saddam's gone, I think (hope!).
Whoo hoo!!!
Stay safe!

I live in California, and I fell asleep on the couch last night. At about 4:20 this morning my husband ran downstairs calling my name. Of course I thought something terrible had happened, but this is the best!!!
Way to go 4th ID!!
Can we send them congratulations somehow?
Anybody know how?

Perhaps they felt bolder with Saddam at large and now wonder what next for his old friends in Tikrit.

The best part: when my children got up, and I got to explain to them what happened, and show them the pictures of Saddam. My youngest was so amazed at how bad he looked! And we're all joyous.
The kids are the ones for whom 9/11 will be their earliest significant major-event memory. I remember Apollo 13 being almost lost and yet coming in safely; they will remember the collapse of the WTC and our victories in Afghanistan and Iraq. This is the kind of moment that they'll be remembering where they were when!
That we have triumphed on this is going to be important to them for the rest of their lives.
I'm sorry for Dem children who will not be cheering this morning like mine were.

Hey, friend! It's a great day, isn't it?Hey Howlin. There are really no words to describe it. I am happy and especially happy for the Iraqi people. An Arab analyst being interviewed on CNN is stating that the Iraqi godfather is no more, the mafia is no more.
