Holiday Ad Has Hidden Hate Message

DALLAS -- A holiday shopping flier that's been distributed to thousands of households in north Texas is creating controversy because a message of hate is included within an advertisement.

An ad for "Party City" was supposed to highlight a sale on Hanukkah items, but it also contained a hateful anti-Semitic message.

The advertisement includes the sentence "CC Hates the Jews" in large, bold letters.

According to ADVO, the company that printed the advertisement, a graphic artist working on the ad had left his desk for a moment, and a co-worker with the initials C.C. changed the text on the ad.

The graphic artist didn't notice the change and the ad went to print.

However, despite the explanation, the Anti-Defamation League wants more questions answered.

"How did it get out of the graphic shop in Pittsburgh? How did it get by ADVO? How did it get by the printer and all of that?" Mark Briskman said.

ADVO representatives in Dallas said they are mortified by the oversight and that they are trying to figure out why the error was never caught.

This is one guy who rewrote an ad on the computer, nobody proofs these small ad buys, it went to about 7,000 households. Its a small buy.

Indeed it does. I used to do editorial layout at a small-town newspaper, and would often get articles and photo layouts that had not yet been given a headline by the editor. So, I would enter a "filler" headline, which the editor would replace before sending off the print plant. One time, however, we ended up getting behind and the editor got in a hurry, and did not notice what I had put in. And neither did anyone at the print plant... until the papers had already been sent out for delivery. Here is what our customers found when they opened their paper (names hidden to protect the, um. guilty)...

Needless to say, there were some profuse apologies published in the next edition, and our process was improved.

Reminds me of a couple of political cartoons over the past year supposedly critical of Israel but incorporating grossly anti-Semitic images. One in the Chicago Tribune portrayed Ariel Sharon with a beak-like "hook nose." Another British cartoon portrayed Sharon eating Palestinian children, supposedly in a parody of Goya's "Saturn Eating His Children." Those ones made it past the editors too.
