And I havn't judged anyone either, but merely criticized posts. I honestly don't see what we are arguing about.
Sometimes, being "compassionate" means being brutally honest - compassion isn't always all sunshine and lollipops.

Hydroxy-L-Tryptophan is a great product for depression and even for those who cannot sleep! You can also use it to help yourself stop the SSRIs and some mood enhancers.
For those looking for a pharmaceutical grade and standardized product, try Metabolic Response Modifiers (MRM) '5-HTP' (100mg caps). (No, I do not work for MRM..;)

Again, speaking for myself: If you've lost someone this way, you feel like you need to defend them when people with no real-life experience on the topic start opining about suicide and assigning motives like cowardice and selfishness to their actions.
Dane's mistake was pinging her so that she could read what a cowardly, selfish person he believed her husband was, in my opinion. He may have intended to be supportive to her, but he went about it awkwardly and it was not received well. (I know, Dane, you may not have meant it that way - that was my personal interpretation, and I will take your word for any explanation you offer.)
I generally agree though that a variety of opinions are quite predictable on FR and to be expected. Not having TILH's name in the title of this thread probably could have helped to keep this from becoming an issue, but the direction of the thread was not something the author could know.

My ex-wife had been very, very depressed for much of her life, and sought help in all kinds of ways. She was an ordained pastor and successful -- making that career choice was partly the result of seeking a religious solution for depression, and believing the answer lay in religion. And, her on-the-side hobby was getting counseling and self-help of all kinds for depression. Ultimately, she acknowledged her depression, got some medication and made some life-changing decisions. Some of her woman pastor friends and soulmates have done the same.
Believing that a medical diagnosis of depression would be stigmatizing was important, to create a willingness to seek treatment.
The medicine that seems to have been mose useful for her and them was Ritalin.
Recognition of one's own depression as a medical condition is an important step, and marks the boundary between running in place and making progress, imho.
Taking action to change life conditions that may have created depression is another step, and marks a "taking responsibility" threshold that some prefer not to cross.

My sincerest sympathies to you, Madam.
There aren't the words to express my profound sadness for you & your family or that'd lessen the depth of your grief at this time.
Try not to pay any mind to some of the posters here.
Most are "young" & as such truly cannot understand how these kinds of things can happen.
Perhaps one day though, they will.
This is a lousy break for you & the family but, the man's suffering is now over, too.
Chin up and be strong, for your life goes on for the family's sake.
...I'm pulling for you, OK?

I understood your point, Chad. There's no controlling what people say on FR - and you kind of have to accept that going in.

I suffered from depression for more than 10 years. I started out a Christian, too.
Paxil saved my life. Buddhism helped.
Three months later, I felt my soul again.

This man's teachings changed my life and If You Let It (i.e. you truly WANT to NOT be a victim of depression), they will change yours:
http://www.3percentclub.com/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=481 He has studied all the "greats" of achievment, and has a way of presenting the ideas that is very accessible. If you look into it with an open mind, without preconceptions or prejudices (about "sales"), you will find a wealth of HELP.
When I first watched his videos, my jaw was literally hitting the floor, because of the simple, clear truths about HOW OUR MINDS WORK, that he presents.
And don't be afraid: I am a Christian, and using our minds to improve our lives IS NOT the work of the devil (excuse-makers like my parents tried to tell me that!)
You can USE YOUR OWN MIND to change yourself. Better and more dependable than drugs, but you have to give up your Excuses, and your dependence on Experts, and take responsibility for Yourself.
I post this for those who it will help (you are your own best ally); not for those who it will offend (you are your own worst enemy).

your subconscious is a willing slave - if you tell it to be happy it will be - end of story, no questions asked. Can I tell my brain to produce more serotonin? Please reconsider what you think you know about depression before someone close to you falls prey to it.

Great post. Actually, this thread has been a great source of information. I hope we all have learned a bit more about depression, it's causes and some treatments. I also pray that those reading this thread who are suffering from depression will understand how suicide affects their loved ones.

There are many degrees of depression and no single shoe fits. Each of us comes here with one perspective; no one person has advice that can be accepted by everyone.
I believe that empowering people to find solutions to their life problems is a great way to deal with garden-variety depression.
Not coincidentally, I believe, being successful in life objectives correlates well with absence of depression.

Yes, 429 probably was my best post on this thread. LOL
To: RaceBannon
There is a huge difference between the decay of the human body due to age and the effects of bad thinking that effect a person's emotions. There's more to depression than "bad thinking."
And Freud is a joke.
