"And yet, it's at Christmastime when so many people are most depressed."
No. Feeling down and true depression are 2 different things. For the depressed, every minute of every day is the same, and there are heavy physical symptoms that are unavoidable and are unfortunately debilitating, leading to further despair.
Real depression has a huge physical element.
Re" wallowing- wallowing in bad thoughts is a personality problem, and is not depression. When someone becomes debilitated, there IS a mourning period. But intelligent people realize what is happening and stop this.
And, contrary to myth, no matter how positive, or how psyched up, or how motivated, or how organized, or how enlightened, the physically debilitating symptoms will not improve. Attitude, outlook and complete realization of the person's situation and the required remedies are helpful, BUT DO NOT CURE MAJOR DEPRESSION. For many, the myriad of 'miracle feel good' drugs do absolutely nothing.

I'm deeply saddened at this time... You, me, and Tom Daschle.....
Maybe being "deeply saddened" could be renamed Being "Tom Daschled"
:-D

"I haven't. I've sometimes wondered in an academic sort of way what would be the best way to kill oneself, but I've never considered actually doing it. I've never felt so bad that I thought death was preferable."
I work at a poison center. After I had been there a little over a year one of the old timers asked me "Have you figured out the best way to do it yet?"
I have heard just about everything, pills, pills and booze, pills and gunshots, pills and slitting, pesticides, chemicals. I know all the pitfalls and the complications.
In my professional opinion there is nothing surefire. In speaking to people who have taken pills I sometimes have to get very graphic about what will happen if they fail. This is not a pretty business. But all that said there is only one painless means of doing it if you are successful and that is carbon monoxide. If you are not successful your life going forward can be a living hell. Aside from the hypoxic injury to your brain (Terri Shiavo), you may have nerve pain for the rest of your life.

My brother drowned himself in a freezing Wisconsin river some years ago.
Speaking only for myself: One thing I never - not for a second - felt toward him was anger, and (unlike some here) I don't believe he's burning in hell.
But that's because I knew him, was aware of his pain, and I knew the state of his spiritual life. I know why he did it. I wish with all my heart and soul that he hadn't, but I know why he did. His absence in our lives is the only thing that hurt our family - if others didn't understand it, or got angry with him, or whatever, it's because they did not know what he was going through.
I very much hope you will reconsider your decision to leave over this kind of stuff. I probably wouldn't have posted on this thread, but I saw your post and while I agree with some of what you said, I felt the need as the sister of a suicidal person to throw in here.

Situational depression is probably what is going on at christmastime. Severe clinical depression is something else.
Interesting take.

The lesson? The images Hollywood presents are lies. Don't aspire to a lie.Very true.
In RETROSPECT, this also applies to TILH's situation.
(I venture in this direction very reluctantly, since I did not know him personally.)
But on the previous thread, we were supplied information where TILH expressed a number of situations that he was depressed about. I can't help but make the detached observation that selling one's house and taking an extended hiking trip to relieve occupational "burnout" is itself an expression of Hollywood idealistic escapism.

I think suicide is selfish, but this person was crass and insensitive and disturbing. He/she needed to be put in the doghouse for a while.

Okay...I responded to his post (103?) as I was reading through the thread, and didn't see what he said afterwards.

ArneFufkin: This account has been banned or suspended.
That may bring some people out of their depressions. Cheered me right up!
Toodles y'all. I have some Christmas shopping to do. I'll be back later.

I can see that in your posts. I am as well. Our society and pol climate is a problem, and I say that not as a 'doomer', but as someone who has gone thru a paradigm shift in my thinking, and can see our problems objectively for what they are.
I do not love FR for pol reasons as much as philosophical reasons. I am abhorred by the deep rooted corruption is all facets of US society.

If most people knew how their suicide would affect their loved ones, most wouldn't do it IMHO.

I hope that all of mine in response to him are pulled but saved. If this man ever comes after me or my family we are going to defend ourselves and I hope we win. He made a specific physical threat of fatal harm to me and terror for my children, not just to make sure that his ridicule of me is preserved on Google.
This is the first time anyone has directly threatened my life and the lives of my children online, and I do not like the feeling. I do not want to be driven off FR by the likes of a savage person like this, and if he is who I think he is, it wouldn't matter if I quit FReeping now anyway...he knows where I am.
To: joesbucks
Killing yourself to solve your problems only creates problems for everyone else about you.
Living is easy if you just remember to quit taking yourself so seriously.
To: ChemistCat
I meant to post as myself, Chemistcat, not my husband, Old Student. I'm a little upset.
"Depression involves a chemical imbalance that is easily remedied with medication. "
Completely false, and a callous statement.
