Edwards on Dean: 'We Can't Win' on Anger

WASHINGTON -- Toiling in Howard Dean's political shadow, Democratic presidential rival John Edwards said Friday he's offering voters a campaign of optimism, inclusion and substance -- a far cry, he suggests, from the fiery rhetoric and partisanship that have fueled the front-runner's ascent.

"If all we are in 2004 is a party of anger, we can't win," Edwards said in remarks prepared for delivery Friday to the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco. "If all we are is divisive and angry and if all we do is attack President Bush and each other, then we will not win the White House in 2004," he said in a speech that aides billed as a critique of Dean's campaign methods. "And we won't deserve to."

One of the few intelligent speeches a Democrat has given since this farce of a primary campaign get going. It's almost too bad Deadwards is Deadwards. If this speech involved anything other than tactical considerations, and if Deadwards wasn't at .0004%, I'd want to hear more of what he had to offer.

Warning! Warning! Don't contact him directly. That way he will know your address and he can sue you on some trumped up charge.

After all he needs to pay for his expensive life style!

Remember, Bush reached out to Edwards, calling him a good man, an effective senator and allowing him the respect and publicity of flying on Air Force One as his guest... knowing Edwards was running.

1 week later, Edwards launched an unethical, vicious attack on Bush because his handlers told him so.

He is no leader, he is merely greedy for pecuniam and power.

True if..if..if..if.

But they aren't just the party of anger... they are also the party of hatred, dirty tricks, revenge, misuse of office, graft, scandal, French style military, tax and wasteful spending, abortion and immorality.

I think they have a complete platform.

How did this Beatles fan rise to power and where did he come from? He talks about his rise frequently yet I don't know much about him.

They've proceeded down that road the last 2 years.

He could have that back at his law office. Which is where he will be returning, after either Clark or Lieberman polishes him off in S. Carolina.

He actually did have to do honest work before he could get his law degree. Beneath the layers of graft and yuppiedom, there is a core to the man.

I'd take Bush over Deadwards, but I'd take Deadwards over Dean any day of the week, any week of the year, any year of the century. I just want the Dems to become somewhat decent again. That way Bush won't be able to get away with junk like the recent Medicare pander.

Just like Teddy Kennedy did

Bush never learns unless he is just laying low until the 2nd term ( if he gets one ) and pay back starts

Maybe if Edwards had spent 5 minutes actually looking out for the interests of his constituents, rather than running for president over the past 5 years, he'd have some credibility.

Go back to Washington, Johnny... isn't it about time for you to vote against another tax cut?

He was interesting at the last debate.

He does not follow the implicit Pro-French foreign policy of Kerry, Clark, etc.

He focused one strident argument about terrorist cells in America. He said there was many, we had to do something about them, etc. etc.

Certainly true, but...he got no reaction from that audience. His mistake is to believe that the activist flacks want truth and the benefit of his knowledge. They don't. They want a devil, Bush, and arguments that places their imaginations about "America" as maliceful or ignorant, whether ir comparison to "Europe", "European Allies", or "the world."

You forgot "gun-grabbing" in your list, but either way they aren't in sync with very many people. Pray for Dean to get the nomination - 49 state landslides are soooo much fun!
