My Underground High School Newspaper

I go to public school in Evanston, a place that is about as "conservative" as SF. There is a big protest mentality there; around the beginning of the Iraq war, the administrators excused students from their classes for "walking out" and marching against the war. I started a newspaper this year to show underclassmen that the rightist viewpoint is rational and not evil. Tell me what you guys think.

This week, some lefties ratted me out to some school bureaucrat who tried to censor me. I calmly stated my First Amendment rights and quoted from Tinker v. Des Moines. Keep up the good fight.

Excellent paper! This will be one of the most significant things you will have done in H.S. Start planning for a sister publication in college. I can assure you, it'll be needed there, too, even more so. Don't be intimidated - you're mature and wise beyond your years.

It was pretty indecisive. The administrator took away the stack of papers that was in my hand, and told me to come back at the end of the day to have the paper evaluated. I took out the extra copies in my backpack and distributed those. Didn't bother to go back to the administrator. I haven't heard again from him yet, but I have a feeling I will when I distribute the new issue next Tuesday.
Wow, thanks for all your support, everyone! This is a nice break from hecklers calling me the anti-Christ.

Good Luck on your next issue!!

Does the school allow any other publications to be sold or distributed on counters or racks? Newspapers, AIDS or Planned Barrenhood brochures, credit card applications, etc? If so, then their not allowing you to do so is an unconstitutional prior restraint on your First Amendment rights based upon content they do not like. If that's the case, you may have a successful lawsuit in the making. Keep us posted, okay?

It's good. You gotta start somewhere. I'm currently one of the co-editors for my high school newspaper and will be next year as well (I'm a junior). We're working on a website of our own, currently under development, and it helps that we have access to some really nice servers. We're modeling it after the layout of the Jeruselam Post (www.jpost.com)
Do you have a paper issue, or is this just internet news?
What you'll need is a solid core audience, and then you can get ad money. Maybe the local NRA or Young Republicans groups can sell you ads.
