Daily Campaign Finance Reform thread

Posted on 12/11/2003 8:58:58 AM PST by Valin

Would you be willing to start a daily thread with this intent? Or conversely, a thread that is bumped to the top regularly? I would help. I have too many responsibilities to commit to hosting it. Lazamataz

To get this started my suggetion, Start putting pressure on your local rep. and senator to undo this monstrosity. Everytime you see them, ask them, What are you going to do about this? another idea, let them know that you are cutting back by 1/2 your contribution to them as a protest.

Pressure Pressure Pressure!

"I just got a reply from Mike Rosen himself: "Great idea. Rational, concise and correct.""

By the way, you just accomplished more in an hour than all of us. You lead by example!

In my opinion, any drive to repeal the legislation really needs President Bush's outspoken support. Karl Rove is the power behind the throne, and he holds Rep. Tancredo in low regard. I hate to be the pessimist, but I believe any repeal measure championed by Tancredo will be mugged in the shadows by Rove et al.

I agree completely! I know Bush will have a bit 'splainin to do, so to speak, but yes, he needs to get behind this 100%.

I didn't know Karl Rove doesn't like Tom Tancredo--What about a co-sponsorship with a congressman Rove likes? Do you know of any favorites of Rove we can get in on this?

Thanks for your kind words!

I'm looking for a link to the KOA website to see if they have streaming audio--the last time I tried, Clear Channel had stopped streaming, but maybe it's back up again.

I'll post a link when I have it :)

Apparently one of KOA's biggest sponsor's has started up streaming audio again--good news! I don't know if you have to pay to become a member, but here's the link:

Mike Rosen is absolutely brilliant, by the way, and often hysterically funny. It's a great show. He discusses local and national politics. :)

Your comment was in line with the Supreme Court, long ago when it still had its collective head screwed on straight. In Sweezy v. New Hampshire almot fifty years ago, it held that "freedom of speech is the most basic right, because all other rights depend on it."

Also, your earlier comment that we need to keep our message simple to avoid "information overload" is spot on.

Yes, a eyewear chain now sponsors the streaming. I signed up, no charge.

Thanks again, IA

Bring back the good ol days, n'est pas?
You should have seen poor Laz trying to explain the above mentioned quote on another thread. Too many people just don't understand what is at stake here.

BUMP!

My senators are Levin and Stabenow - hardcore Fascists both. It is worse than useless to speak to them about infringements on liberty since the only liberty they value is their liberty to rule the rest of us.

My Congressional 'Representative' is Nick Smith, one of the RINOs that voted for this monstrosity. I have questioned him several times about his vote and he is unwavering in his support for Congressionally imposed limits on Free Speech. I have no hope he would vote to repeal this law.

However, I will be making it clear to him that I will publicly oppose his position in Congress and will actively work against his son's attempt to replace him in the next election - due primarily to his decision to impose an untouchable political aristocracy upon his constituents.

I called my congressman yesterday. At least he voted right. My two sinators are "Kerrying" worthless.

I'm on hold about to give the comment line some hell(politely) right now.

Schwarz would even be worse. Bisbee is a gun grabber so I automaticly don't trust him.

I don't know DeRossett, Walberg, or DeWeese's stance on this

Here's the letter I faxed to Bush (and a similar one to Smith):

You have attained success in your attempt to restrict the ability of your constituents to comment upon or criticize your political behavior. The USSC upheld your traitorous, evil, affirmative signature on the CFR legislation.

As Scalia so eloquently stated:

"The first instinct of power is the retention of power, and, under a Constitution that requires periodic elections, that is best achieved by the suppression of election time speech. We have witnessed merely the second scene of Act I of what promises to be a lengthy tragedy. In scene 3 the Court, having abandoned most of the First Amendment weaponry that Buckley left intact, will be even less equipped to resist the incumbents' writing of the rules of political debate. The federal election campaign laws, which are already (as today's opinions show) so voluminous, so detailed, so complex, that no ordinary citizen dare run for office, or even contribute a significant sum, without hiring an expert advisor in the field, can be expected to grow more voluminous, more detailed, and more complex in the years to come — and always, always, with the objective of reducing the excessive amount of speech. "

The key point here is that you and the rest of the ruling political class have now legally constrained who can speak about you and when. The rest of the act is just fluff.

Repeat: We are now restricted, by law (by you), from speaking about political candidates prior to an election upon pain of imprisonment.

Some will argue that, oh it's only certain groups of people who cannot speak, but that is a red herring. Once the ability of the American people to manifest political speech has been limited, it is only a matter of time until that freedom to speak is reduced to complete uselessness. Indeed, ultimately we will be told we have the freedom of political speech but the only situation in which we will be able to exercise that 'freedom' will be when we are alone in the toilet.

You, the political class, have now made it clear you are separated from us common folk. You have established the precedent of yourselves as the new feudal aristocracy in America and objections from us common folk will not be tolerated upon penalty of imprisonment.

In 2000 I prayed for your victory. I voted for you. I rejoiced when you won.

You have betrayed that support.

From this point on I will publicly oppose your position as President. I will actively work against your re-election attempt - due primarily to your decision to impose an untouchable political aristocracy upon your constituents. I will do all in my power to assure that neither you nor your progeny will ever again subvert and corrupt the freedom given us by God and protected by the blood of our citizens.

You have earned the enmity of all who love liberty and resist tyranny. You have made it clear you represent the same evil that gave the world Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot and Hitler. You have subverted liberty. You have imposed tyranny upon your constituents.

May God have mercy on your soul.
