They had a very partisan press back in those times. Every faction and party had their newspapers pushing their idea's and slamming the other side. They called each other all sorts of names I would bet. It was yellow journalism times, the press wasn't all that much professional.

That's a joke. The Democrats don't have to obey campaign finance laws. Only the Republicans do.

Maybe down at the local level, a few bucks here or there, you're right. But the parties can no longer get around the soft money ban - an illegal attempt to circumvent it would be far too obvious with the individual contribution limits. The GOP will win out in hard money. What will likely happen is that the DNC and RNC will give a nod to certain issue advocacy groups, that will then get the excess large-money donors.

Ads will be on the internet and direct mail. This hurts the liberal networks also. No revenue around election time.

It's a Constitutionally valid law.

Banning political speech by anyone except for the mass media is constitutional? Hardly.

This law prevents me from criticizing a candidate on air or mentioning his name or showing his image unless I am a government-approved media outlet. It prevents me from purchasing an ad or pooling resources with others to purchase an ad.

It also makes political parties official parts of the government, which was never intended.

Start your own newsletter, write a tv script, play, novel, short story, publish articles on politics if you can't play by the new rules. There are many ways to skin a cat.

Excellent point. All any of us have to do is set up our own national newspaper or gain control of one of the big television-cable networks and we can freely express our opinions on a national scale in the last few weeks before an election while the opinions of our opponents, who do not own national newspapers or control a cable-television network, are reduced to so much white noise.

We don't even need to do that. We can each establish an Internet blog in which we may publish our opinions to be read by exactly no one.
