WASHINGTON - President Bush quietly signed legislation Tuesday that would extend for 10 years a ban on plastic guns that can be slipped past airport metal detectors or through X-ray machines.

The legislation bans the manufacture, sale or possession of such firearms, but exempts military and intelligence agencies.

It's also worth noting that HK had a plastic-framed pistol long before Glock.

They could make it out of carbon. The tail feather on the afterburner of the ATF's engine are made of carbon.

I'm not a gunsmith, but I'd imagine it would be possible to fabrcate a barrel out of ceramic, reinforced with carbon-fiber-epoxy if need be.

I guarantee you such a barrel would be radio-opaque. It would show up on an x-ray.

If his signing of this ban extension on imaginary guns helps him politically to be able to refrain from signing the ban extension on "assault weapons", I can deal with it.

You mean just like his "Constitutional questions" around McCain-Feingold kept him from signing that bill? Or counting on the USSC to un-f#ck that bad portions of said CFR bill?

Don't count on government doing anything but making things WORSE.

Yes, but airline passengerspaeons aren't (yet) given cavity searches when they go through magnetometers.

Of course, knives that can get through metal detectors are stone age technology, and crossbows aren't all that much newer.

How about the metal detectors that you walk through? Are they senstive to the same things as the x-ray machines?

Does it shoot a "little" to the left? LOL

Yes, I'm sure it does. If not, I'm sure I can find one that does. LOL!

Since when were articles from AP to be excerpted?

They aren't a subsidiary of LAT or WP.

Just because the public and even some LE agencies and military don't know about it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. If theres a ban, theres a reason for it.

Absolutely false. This ban first originated when columnist Jack Anderson wrote that the then new Glock 17 could not be detected by airport metal detectors. This was as completely fictitious as the porcelain slide on the Glock 7's movie "Die Hard" but started the panic that continues to this very day about a fabricated publicity lie.

Your blind faith in the legislative process betrays you.

OOPS! This comment was not meant to offend women who have achieved the lofty status of Grandmother, or are of that age group. I was refering to a hypethetical, stereotypical extremely aged woman who's appearance would not be enhanced by clothing designed for a much younger woman. This same principal would obviously apply to the male gender also.(did I save my butt here, or just dig in deeper?)

And "plastic" guns are a moot point for the X-ray machine, since even all-plastic toy SQUIRT GUNS show up just fine on airport X-ray machines.

Darn right.

The story on how I ended up buying a Glock 17.

Slimeball Ted Kennedy all over the media in the mid 80's, decrying the Glock as a plastic gun that could make it through the airport undetected. Curious, I looked into it. Found a gun magazine article on the 17, and it showed a photo of the Glock under an airport x-ray machine. Sorry, liars, but even the plastic frame shows up clearly under x-ray, and the gun is, by weight, 80% steel. On top of that, it was drop-tested safe up to 30 feet, and you don't have to remember to flick the safety off when you're in a high-stress situation. So, I bought it, and I still like it.

Two truths: The Glock is a good pistol, and Ted Kennedy was, is, and always will be, a liar and a dirtbag.

My oldest stepdaughter is getting married in about six months and as soon as she and her husband are out of school (U.of Chicago/Harvard) they plan to have children. At that point I will get to encounter a hot grandma!
