Darn! It looks like Dubya just lost the all-crucial pagan vote.

They'd have more of a case if they could show an example of a "pagan faith based group". One that meets the qualification of not trying to preach to or convert the recipients.

Backed up by Americans United for Separation of Church and State, pagans across the U.S. are demanding a Bush administration official apologize for saying pagan groups don't care about the poor.

If the AUFSOCAS (or AUSCS) was really against State sponsorship of any religious ties to government they would be opposing the pagans' attempts at faith based charity exemptions. Holding up a fringe religion for inclusion does not make their case AGAINST Church and State ties.

The Washington Post reports since Towey's comment, outraged pagans have bombarded the White House and Internet chat rooms with scores of examples of their charitable activity. Particularly common, they say, are food drives in conjunction with Pagan Pride Day celebrations across the country.

"Once you make it clear to any applicant that public money must go to public purposes and can't be used to promote ideology...

Pagan Pride Day celebrations would appear to promote ideology.

"I haven't run into a pagan faith-based group yet, much less a pagan group that cares for the poor!" Towey responded

So, he hasn't 'run into' any yet -- that makes him a bad guy?

Sounds to me like the anti-American crowd is once again finding an excuse to bellyache.

ROFL!! The ultimate insult in post-Clinton America --You don't care! If Bush had accused them of idol-worship, conducting a Black Mass, or infanticide, it would be taken as a badge of honor. But to not care?? Outrageous!

I finally get what all this hollering for apologies is about. If we acquiesce, it gives them legitimacy when, in fact, they have none. If they were just ignored, as they should be, soon their complaints would become like the clanking of hollow tin.

The Pagans apparently need to bring down a couple of buildings in order to get themselves a Solstice Dinner at the White House.

Particularly common, they say, are food drives in conjunction with Pagan Pride Day celebrations across the country.

A one-day food drive doth not a "faith-based charitable organization" make...

LOL
They really are coming out of the woodwork against the President aren't they?

The pagans are endorsing Clarke and Dean, so who cares if they are insulted? (Bogus anyway)

I wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of those pagan folks. They might offer me as a human sacrifice.

"Most troublingly, it implies that the Bush administration intends to discriminate against certain faith-[based] groups from the outset. This is a curious stand for you to take, as you have repeatedly insisted that the administration will not play favorites among religious groups under the faith-based initiative."

Discrimination based on religious beliefs is not permitted by the Constitution, but that is not what was proposed here. The plan is to discriminate among charitable groups based on how much they help the poor...the money IS for the poor, after all.

Lynn isn't making a mistake here, he knows he's twisting 'no discrimination based on religious beliefs' into 'no discrimination among religious groups.'
