I'm Looking for "Patriot Act" Success Stories

Posted on 12/08/2003 12:16:58 PM PST by PureSolace

All week long I've been talking with other students at the school I go to about the pros and cons of the Patriot Act, and I was wondering if any freepers had any information to contribute. Does anyone have a list of success stories or embarrassments because of the Patriot Act? From the searches that I've done it seems most of the websites on the net are anti Patriot Act because they say it can be abused and target regular everyday citizens, and even peaceful protesters? (That one baffled me) Anyway, Any information or insight you guys can give would be wonderful. Thanks :)

My point was that these plots were thwarted BEFORE the Patriot Act also. So, how do we know that PA has had any effect on terrorism? Oplan Bojinka is an example of a plot that didn't work...even though we weren't "protected" by PA.

Is it a function to the size of the hole?

Absolutely! When that jet "opened up", it was a sudden big hole. All of the higher-pressure air was vented in a much shorter time, which was indeed "explosive decompression".

If you crack the valve on a scuba tank it will just hiss for a long time and get really cold. Bust the neck off with a hammer and the scuba tank will leave the premesis in a grand hurry.

Are you really that much in fear of your life from terrorism? You haven't been keeping up with the news. You are more likely to be killed by police who raid the wrong house or killed by a drunk driver than even see a terrorist in action. You really need to get your "knee-jerk" fear under control ... down to the level of the actual threat.

Because of the Patriot Act, I was finally forced to get my name changed on my SS card after 14 years of marriage! Success!

What are you gonna do when the next terrorist act ocurrs on US soil. (And believe me it will)

Are you gonna cry to Papa Ascroft and say....

Please.... Please..... give us the Patriot Act II

You wimp!

Here are some more quotes that will put your panties in a bunch!

Favourite Quotes:

Benjamin Franklin's immortal statement - "Those who are willing to trade civil liberties for temporary security, deserve neither".

Benjamin Franklin - "He that lives upon hope will die fasting."

John Adams - "There is danger from all men. The only maxim of a free government ought to be to trust no man living with power to endanger the public liberty."

I've found that the overwhelming majority of these types...

Simply know what rights and freedoms are worth, and have a grasp on the actual threat levels that have you quaking in your shoes and looking over your shoulder.

The Founding Principles are philosophical in nature, and apply to humans and their rights as given by the Creator simply because they live. These Principles know no bounds of time or hardship.

The Constitution prevailed through a number of "real wars". Why do you image that threats should have more impact on those principles than actual warfare. (Which you so obviously haven't experienced.)

Yes, a lot of Americans died when the Twin Towers were attacked. Many died at Pearle Harbor, but no one spoke of suspending the Constitution as a result of that attack. The only difference between now in then is that young people of today have no idea what the reall differences are between this Nation and all the others: Life under the Constitution.

Well, 'twas ever thus.

I've met them over the years: US military MDs who spent the entire war in Hawaii after Pearl Harbor, but had a million war stories. The DPs who arrived in my hometown in the Fifties and who were ALL survivors of Warsaw. The guys who were in ROTC from 1959-1963 who call themselves Vietnam Vets, but never left the States.

Meanwhile, my own father served in both theaters in WWII & had 2 bronze and one silver star and would never discuss how he got them and never ever claimed the title hero. All he'd say is that he did his job.

What did Ben or John say about misrepresenting an event with a doctored photo?

Perhaps you could you explain the 'poorly' doctored photo on your FR profile page misrepresenting the scene at WACO.

My grandfather was the same way...he actually rolled across Europe with Patton's army to break the siege of Bastogne.

One of the meekest men I have ever known.

If you hate your country so much, I can understand why you prefer the "clarity" of the federalis system of Rs and Ds.

"Are you really that much in fear of your life from terrorism?"

Oh quite the contrary, I am covered by the blood of Jesus...if I go I go.

My concern is for my Nation. One single Nuclear detonation in Washington DC with our government in place would easily lead to worldwide economic collapse, invasion of Democratic South Korea, Israel, Taiwan and possibly even the United States itself by foreign powers as well as the immediate suspension of civil law and the ordinance of Military rule. You wanna see your Constitutional Rights chewed up…wait for that to happen…

None of that is far-fetched or unreasonable to predict. It is the logical end result if established federal authority [including military] was to be severely damaged.

You may not like the fact that we now have responsibility for other Nations [economically/democratically/militarily] but your personal like, dislike agreement or disagreement as to its Constitutionality has no affect on the fact that the responsibilities are indeed there. Ignoring them or brushing them aside as Unconstitutional is remarkably capricious. At what point do you sober up and admit that the 1700’s are gone and they are never, ever coming back? At what point do you sober up and admit that this Government of ours or the relationships we now have with the rest of the World will never be dismantled from within to the size of our original government or it's responsibilities shrunk to pre-1800 levels?

Our Constitution is indeed the foundation that this Nation stands on but to honestly believe in the possibility of a return to the original state of national and international affairs that our Nation enjoyed when the document was written and established is willfully infantile and ignorant.

What is your opinion of Rush Limbaugh? He seems a prime candidate for the patriot act. He has contacts all over the world, admittedly abused drugs and is suspected of money laundering. Should he be investigated, other journalists would fear speaking out against the administration and the patriot act for fear of similar treatment. He also has thousands of aquaintances. Surveillance of his phone & email converstations would likely turn up dozens of other people who meet the threshhold of suspicion.

Rush is also very wealthy. With asset forfeiture laws the way they are, it would be very easy to fund your whole department for years to come. Wouldn't that be great!

My opinion is that anyone not breaking the law has nothing to fear from this administration...and if I am not correct, I believe the Patriot Act is sunseted to insure the same powers won flow into the hands of scheming Liberals were they to ever take back [hahaha] the executive branch of government.

If Rush broke the law and it can be proven...then he should bite the bullet. Anyone surrounding him shoudlnt have anything to fear if they themselves arent breaking the law.

Law governs the Lawless. Dopians and Liberals try and pretend Law governs the Lawful...quite the reverse.

At what point do you sober up and admit that the 1700’s are gone and they are never, ever coming back?

I believe I was cognizant of that very early in life. The Constitution simply does not need to be set aside or infringed in order for the government to provide any additional security. This Nation's responsibility can be accomplished without the reduction in American Rights and Freedoms. You have no grounds to believe that the rights of citizens need to be reduced in order to provide absolutely proper levels of security and safety, do you?

Please explain how the Constitution and the Founding Principles reduce your safety. Explain how those principles impede the responsibilities of those who insure our safety. When I read those documents, I become positive that the Founding Principles ensure my safety. It is clear that you have not read or perhaps do not understand those ideals. As I told you before, the philosophy behind the Constitution is timeless.

You look for the government as your "savior" without noting that the US government has seriously impacted the lives of its citizens far more than terrorists have. The guys that brought you Waco are the ones you wish to provide unlimited powers. These are the same guys who can break into the wrong house, kill the occupants, and suffer no charges. Are you really sure you want to grant totalitarian power to buffoons? You are most unwise.

I can think of means of securing the American people from terroristic threats while upholding the Constitution. Most of these things are not being done due to "political correctness" or globalization. In short, the government has already abused its extended powers.
