Dirty Bomb Rockets Vanish
Washington Post ^ | Dec. 7, 2003 | Joby Warrick

TIRASPOL, Moldova -- In the ethnic conflicts that surrounded the collapse of the Soviet Union, fighters in several countries seized upon an unlikely new weapon: a small, thin rocket known as the Alazan. Originally built for weather experiments, the Alazan was transformed into a terror weapon, packed with explosives and lobbed into cities. Military records show that at least 38 Alazan warheads were modified to carry radioactive material, effectively creating the world's first surface-to-surface dirty bomb.

The warheads are not known to have been used. But now, according to experts and officials, they have disappeared.

Part of Moldova is in the eastern part of Romania, the other part is just east and north of there, was part of the Soviet Union. This latter part is the Moldova they are talking about.

All encouraging news...

The last known repository was here, in a tiny separatist enclave known as Transdniester, which broke away from Moldova 12 years ago.

The Transdniester Moldovan Republic is a sliver of land no bigger than Rhode Island located along Moldova's eastern border with Ukraine. Its government is recognized by no other nation. But its weapons stocks -- new, used and modified -- have attracted the attention of black-market arms dealers worldwide. And they're for sale, according to U.S. and Moldovan officials and weapons experts.

the only Soviet Republic remaining on the face of the earth, is the largest weapons bazaar in the world, including conventional and non-conventional weapons.

It still considers itself a Soviet Republic?, I didnt quite understand that part.

I just came across this article, it doesn't have a date, but Google search brought it up as "9 hours ago".

OSAMA TERROR PLOT TO NUKE UK

AL-QAIDA terrorists have been plotting to devastate London with a dirty nuclear bomb.

The evil device was to be delivered on a cargo ship and moored at a dock ready to be detonated when the wind was right.

If it had exploded, it would have contaminated a huge area and forced the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of terrified people.

The plot, thwarted by security forces, was revealed by Tory Homeland Security shadow minister Patrick Mercer, a terrorist expert and former senior army officer.

A cargo ship suspected of carrying the bomb - the 26,000-ton MV Nisha - was stormed by the elite Special Boat Squadron in the English Channel two years ago, said Mr Mercer.

But the Indian-owned vessel was carrying sugar. The real Al-Qaida ship bound for Britain was frightened off by the raid.

The bomb would have been unlikely to cause many deaths because the radiation given off would be weak. The plan was to cause panic and paralyse the City.

Mr Mercer said: "Although there would not be mass deaths there would be huge terror."

Al-Qaida chief Osama bin Laden (below) still has a fleet of rogue ships which could be used as floating bombs.

Last week London Mayor Ken Livingstone revealed FOUR Al-Qaida attempts to target London had been thwarted. The People has learned the dirty bomb was one of those threats.

Others were targeting the Jewish community in north London with ricin, hitting an airliner at Heathrow with a ground-to-air missile and an attack on a soft target like a disco.

OK...thats it. I have often pondered getting a firearm for self and family defense (so don't think I got my tinfoil hat now because of this article) and this story takes the cake. I can only imagine one of these dirty bombs detonating in the downtown area of the major metro area I live nearest to (Chicago) and all hell breaking loose. Livng a few miles from what I'll call a very "diverse", crime ridden, gang invested area would make me feel a little queesy when, in the event of such an attack, the "have-nots" would certainly start looting/rioting/raping/pillaging the "haves". In short, I don't want to caught with my (blank) in my hand. To be brief, and I'm sure a lot of Freepers would know this, what would be a good "starter" firearm, what are the price ranges for such an item, and are there any shooting ranges in the SW suburban Chicagoland area. I'm off to bed...any advice would be appreciated. God bless...and stay safe.

You are making an excellent point. The dirty bomb itself may not be as dangerous, but it would break up civil order and that's what would cause panic, chaos, lootings, and worse.

Having a firearm to defend oneself sounds like an excellent idea.

If you are serious, get a Winchester 94 made by USRAC here in the USA. This is a 30-30 "deer rifle", excellent for showing the jury you don't have a mean thought in your body. An AK look-alike has about the same effectiveness militarily as the 94 but is much worse when the prosecuting attorney holds it up for the jury to see!! In fact I suggest "deer rifles" in general for applications like yours.

Handguns are of little use in point defense except in the hands of an expert. If you need something to carry concealed so that an expert can't see it immediately, then it pretty much has to be a handgun 16 oz. or lighter.

There are excellent bulk capsicum projectors designed to deter grizzly bear attack. These are available over the internet and are not illegal. Well, very illegal. Google "bear pepper spray".

Well that's one way to burst the real estate bubble that's been building in major cities across the US. So,is their a clause in your insurance policy covering nuclear contamination for the next 10,000 years on your property.

We need some CIA types to go in there and wack these guys, but not before they've told us under extreme torture where these dirty bombs are.

what would be a good "starter" firearm

It's hard to go wrong with a Ruger 10/22 (140$)to start. Even with a 25 magazine I wouldn't rely on it for defence against my locals (locos) though. For a "When the Offal Hits the Rotating Blades" firarm I would buy a SKS/AK (200-450$)clone with 30 round Mags. More important really is that you practice with whatever you buy often. And no house should be without at least one 12 gauge shotgun. Mossberg 500 (150-200$)is good and cheap, Remmington 870 (225-350$)is my choice cuz it's easier to take apart and clean, but it's a little more expensive.
