Schwarzenegger Aims to Bypass Lawmakers

SACRAMENTO — Rebuffed by state lawmakers in an early test of his administration, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will now try to bypass the Legislature whenever feasible and tap into the public support he commands by bringing his agenda directly to the ballot, administration aides said Saturday.

The governor, himself, remained publicly silent about Friday night's defeat of the state spending limit and $15 billion bond measure he had proposed. His aides, however, cast the votes as confirmation that the Legislature is ignoring the message of the Oct. 7th recall vote and the mandate they contend Schwarzenegger won.

That campaign would take to the ballot possibly more than a half-dozen measures sponsored by Schwarzenegger and various groups aligned with him. Included would be a constitutional amendment for a balanced budget and spending cap, and a package of changes in the state's workers compensation system, according to a Schwarzenegger adviser.

"I've noticed that the farthest from the center on each side of the spectrum seem to despise anyone appearing "moderate" more than those of the opposite side."

They rant and rave on the board, then they quietly vote for the likes of Barbara Boxer, as one of the "ultra-conservatives" admitted it on the board.

Arnold and Bush aren't conservative enough, but Boxer, Bustamante and Gore are...

"Fiscal conservative" Arnie got spanked for trying to borrow money to keep a grossly bloated government inflated. And his buttkisser supporters just can't understand why Republican legislators didn't line up behind him and help him do the deed.

Where was France mentioned in this thread? By the way, the memorial to the Corps at Le Bois Belleau is both breath taking and humbling. The French care takers treat it with a reverence you cannot imagine.

You're ever so right,I lived in Verdun as a kid and whenever dad was able ,we'd tour all of that battleground in Alsace. I was going to Southern France regularly, and may do so again, and I have to tell you, the monuments and memorial to Les Americains are heartfelt and well taken care of.

Now, Normandy, I have not yet made the pilgramage .. but then, I soon shall. Wanna check into a 6oth anniversary trip?

I stopped cursing once I finally made it off of the "Peripherique", the freeway that circles Paris. We have friends who lived near the Eiffel Tower in the 8th (or 7th?) arrondissimo (sp) on the sixth floor of an apartment building, complete with cage elevator and roof deck. (And buildings in Paris don't get much taller than that.) Couldn't beat the (free) rent.

Funny, the other day I stumbled across pictures from that trip, the ones where Denis (our friend and a native of Roen) and I visited Jim Morrison's grave. It was at some famous cemetery in Paris. The grave had a bust of Morrison's head and the mouth was blackened from everybody letting Jim finish their joints. There was a group of German kids there, eating sandwiches and drinking wine. A picnic at Morrison's grave. It took me a while to find out they were from Germany because they spoke better English than the English. (We had also spent some time in London and took the Hovercraft across the channel from Dover. Because of rough waters, we had to take the Sealink ferry back, wife dryheaving all the way for over 5 hours. Fun.)

When we got to the cemetery where Morrison was buried, I asked the guy at the front gate information booth if he knew where Jim Morrison was buried. He gave me a disgusted look and just pointed with his head. Sure enough, I start looking at all the big tombstones around me (most were as tall or taller than me and they were real crowded together) and every few stones had a big "JIM" with an arrow graffitied on it. I just followed the graffiti for a while and voila!, Jim's grave.

Don't you love how the slackers treat one of their gods? UGH..

The A8 in Cote d'Azur is a pretty good road, but driving in Grasse or Draguignan is terrifying..

Think back to 1992

I do so, constantly. I was in my mid-20's in 1992, had strong conservative (yep) principles but little actual knowledge of politics. Close friends who were more experienced bashed Bush Sr. endlessly, almost word for word what we are seeing today aimed at Bush, Jr. And we had to "vote for Perot because the GOP abandoned its base".

I did so and regretted it sorely the next day... and for eight long years... regretted it bitterly on 9/11...and still do.

That's why I so vehemently support and vote for the candidate "furthest to the right who can win"... it was a hard lesson.

Wrong. This whole measure had to do with the spending cap, not the borrowing. Democrats didn't want to consent to such a strong cap, while Republians want a stronger cap. The concern particularly has to do with the ability to declare an "emergency" of any variety to circumvent the cap. CA GOP are boneheads- they should have voted for the bill (it would have failed anyways). Then, they should have exclusively blamed Democrats for risking the bankruptcy of the state. Too bad the GOP here has no political chops. Arnold will likely pull off the coup though by going to the people.
