I believe the usual answer is that they are concerned that illegals will be afraid to report crimes committed against them. American citizens can go to hell, though.

But that still is not a good reason. After all they report other criminals without worrying that they will become worried about reporting crimes against them. Why should illegals be any different then say prostitutes?

You are right. I have sympathy for local police who feel it is not their look-out to do the feds job for them. And it is a valid point that the tons of illegals in many urban areas would be less inclined to have ANYTHING to do with local police if they thought doing so would get them deported. I understand why doctors, nurses and schoolteachers don't want to be border patrol agents either.

The Feds have shrugged off resposibility for this. It is part of what brought us Sept. 11th. This situation must be rectified by forcing the Federal gov't to DO ITS JOB, and leave the school lunch programs, etc. to the localities.

The results of the poll are pretty amazing.

Deeper question - will the 9-11 Commission propose that illegals be reported and detained with the help of state and local law enforcement regardless of the cost and various illegal prohibitions on holding these federal criminals?
