Former Secretary of State Bill Jones, citing a "call to public service," officially joined the field of candidates vying for the GOP nomination to take on Sen. Barbara Boxer next year.
"California is an issue-driven state," Jones said Friday, shortly after filing his declaration of candidacy at the Fresno County Registrar of Voters. "I have a record of 30 years service, I have supported the party and the president," said Jones. "That qualifies me to be a candidate."

Howard Kaloogian announced his candidacy for US Senate in the 2004 California GOP Primary election. The GOP nominee will challenge Barbara Boxer.
Kaloogian was Chairman of the successful Recall Gray Davis Committee this year, and he represented the 74th Assembly District from 1994 to 2000.
He announced his plans to run as the conservative choice for conservative members of the Republican party today on the Roger Hedgecock radio show. Kaloogian is committed to tax cuts and other conservative views, and he used part of his time on the radio to denounce Boxer's failed liberal policies.

Dang, I'll have to change my tagline again without Strickland in the race.
Also...
Additionally, two major ballot proposals - one to sell $15 billion worth of bonds to pay off the state deficit and another to cap state spending - were being debated in the Legislature. If approved by midnight, they will be headed for a March vote, where they will join ballot issues calling for a $12.3 bond issue for schools and a proposal to lower the requirement to pass a state budget to 55 percent of the Legislature from two-thirds. _ In the 3rd Congressional District, around Sacramento, incumbent Rep. Doug Ose is retiring after three terms. Three strong candidates are vying for the Republican nomination to replace him, including state Sen. Rico Oller of San Andreas, former Attorney General Dan Lungren, and Mary Ose, a Sacramento businesswoman and Doug Ose's sister.
_In the 20th District, where Democratic Rep. Cal Dooley is stepping down, a primary battle is brewing between former state Sen. Jim Costa and Lisa Quigley, Dooley's former chief of staff. While the Fresno-area district is considered largely Democratic, Republicans are watching the race in case a bloody battle between Quigley and Costa weakens the eventual nominee and offers some hope for Republicans to capture the seat in November.
_In the 46th District, Republican Rep. Dana Rohrabacher will face a challenge from former U.S. Rep. Robert Dornan, once known to many voters as "B-1 Bob" both for his ardent support of the B-1 bomber program and often bombastic rhetorical style. Dornan, a former radio host who served 18 years in the House before being ousted by Democrat Loretta Sanchez in 1996, filed papers in Orange County late Friday.

Howard Kaloogian announced his candidacy for US Senate in the 2004 California GOP Primary election. Howard Kaloogian is one of the most honest, ethical, and effective Republicans ever to hold office in the California State Assembly and would make a great United States Senator.

It was announced Friday. I was on hold on KSFO with that news (Strickland out/endorsing Jones, and Kaloogian in) that was posted on the CA mesage board, when KSFO's morning talk host Melanie Morgan announced it officially during Brian Sussman's show. Free Republic is ALWAYS up with the hot news!

Howard has a lot of friends among the conservative talk show hosts throught the state which should help him plus he has the e-mail and doner list from the RecallGrayDavis campaign that he headed.
I hope that he made copies of all the petitions with their signatures and addresses for a future mailing list!
In petition drives that i've been involved with that is something that we always did.

SAN DIEGO Howard Kaloogian, a former assemblyman who chaired the Recall Gray Davis Committee, said Friday he would run for the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate seat held by Democrat Barbara Boxer.
''I decided to enter the race for the U.S. Senate because there is no viable conservative running,'' said Kaloogian, a Carlsbad resident who served in the Assembly from 1994 to 2000.
''We need someone who will fight for lower taxes, a strong national defense, stronger border control and traditional values. I am the only candidate who is this kind of solid conservative.''
The other candidates for the Republican nomination include Toni Casey, a former Los Altos Hills mayor; Bill Jones, former California secretary of state;and Rosario Marin, a former Huntington Park mayor and U.S. treasurer.
''The historic recall election was the result of citizen disgust with California's failed leaders, and Barbara Boxer is just another shade of Gray,'' Kaloogian said in a statement his campaign released.
''We need tocontinue to bring about change in California, and getting rid of Barbara Boxer is the best step we can take for California's future.''
A call to Boxer's campaign for comment, after customary business hours, was not immediately returned. Friday was the deadline for potential candidates to file to run.
