Former Secretary of State Bill Jones, citing a "call to public service," officially joined the field of candidates vying for the GOP nomination to take on Sen. Barbara Boxer next year.

"California is an issue-driven state," Jones said Friday, shortly after filing his declaration of candidacy at the Fresno County Registrar of Voters. "I have a record of 30 years service, I have supported the party and the president," said Jones. "That qualifies me to be a candidate."

Howard Kaloogian announced his candidacy for US Senate in the 2004 California GOP Primary election. The GOP nominee will challenge Barbara Boxer.

Kaloogian was Chairman of the successful Recall Gray Davis Committee this year, and he represented the 74th Assembly District from 1994 to 2000.

He announced his plans to run as the conservative choice for conservative members of the Republican party today on the Roger Hedgecock radio show. Kaloogian is committed to tax cuts and other conservative views, and he used part of his time on the radio to denounce Boxer's failed liberal policies.

Howard Kaloogian announced his candidacy for US Senate in the 2004 California GOP Primary election.

Howard Kaloogian is one of the most honest, ethical, and effective Republicans ever to hold office in the California State Assembly and would make a great United States Senator.

It was announced Friday. I was on hold on KSFO with that news (Strickland out/endorsing Jones, and Kaloogian in) that was posted on the CA mesage board, when KSFO's morning talk host Melanie Morgan announced it officially during Brian Sussman's show. Free Republic is ALWAYS up with the hot news!

Howard has a lot of friends among the conservative talk show hosts throught the state which should help him plus he has the e-mail and doner list from the RecallGrayDavis campaign that he headed.

I hope that he made copies of all the petitions with their signatures and addresses for a future mailing list!

In petition drives that i've been involved with that is something that we always did.

SAN DIEGO – Howard Kaloogian, a former assemblyman who chaired the Recall Gray Davis Committee, said Friday he would run for the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate seat held by Democrat Barbara Boxer.

''I decided to enter the race for the U.S. Senate because there is no viable conservative running,'' said Kaloogian, a Carlsbad resident who served in the Assembly from 1994 to 2000.

''We need someone who will fight for lower taxes, a strong national defense, stronger border control and traditional values. I am the only candidate who is this kind of solid conservative.''

The other candidates for the Republican nomination include Toni Casey, a former Los Altos Hills mayor; Bill Jones, former California secretary of state;and Rosario Marin, a former Huntington Park mayor and U.S. treasurer.

''The historic recall election was the result of citizen disgust with California's failed leaders, and Barbara Boxer is just another shade of Gray,'' Kaloogian said in a statement his campaign released.

''We need tocontinue to bring about change in California, and getting rid of Barbara Boxer is the best step we can take for California's future.''

A call to Boxer's campaign for comment, after customary business hours, was not immediately returned. Friday was the deadline for potential candidates to file to run.
