Something Interesting Alexa Showed Me Regarding Recent Trolling Activity

Posted on 12/05/2003 4:22:27 AM PST by I Am Not A Mod

Hi everyone.

One of the things I have noticed lately is that, at least from where I sit, trolling activity has increased greatly recently. Many relatively new accounts, or older accounts with previously little or no activity, suddenly coming on and posting negative comments about President Reagan, saying they are lifelong Republicans but no more, and a bunch of other things that could be legitimately held beliefs on their part but when taken in aggregate make it clear that there is quite a bit of trolling action going on.

I found the following to be quite illuminating. Alexa.com is a website which tracks web usage for those who voluntarily use their software (a browser toolbar extension). They accumulate the data and compile it into useful reports, such as traffic reports. They also report on related topics-- "People who visit this page also visit".

So, what sites do "People who visit" Free Republic also visit?

Oops, forgot to remove my tagline from another thread. It refers to "moderate" Muslims - Muslims who aren't terrorists, but who remain silent on the activities of their fellow Muslim terrorists.

"I don't know the why or wherefore of it yet, but it's a definite phenomenon that is occurring on here over and over lately. That's all I know for sure."

And there is an equally disturbing mob mentality. I keep seeing intelligent conservatives being bashed on ideological grounds. It seems like relativism rules most threads.

You neither annoyed me nor shot yourself in the foot. You were being skeptical, which a good conservative should be. Regards.

Correct me if I'm not understanding this correctly. You are saying that Jim Robinson can see what other sites we've been to?

I have no guilty conscience here, since I no longer even lurk at places like DU, but I just don't think I believe that I could have understood you correctly. FR is just one window I have open while I compulsively check news sites and my email sites again and again. ;-) I can't believe he can see what else I'm doing (nor do I particularly believe he cares.)

You ban trolls, you don't tag and release and monitor their movements...right?

It's not JimRob that you have to worry about. It's NSA (no such agency) that monitors your every mouse move and click.

A very illuminating post - looks like there is a sizable number of juveniles who've put a bullseye on FreeRepublic. Best of luck kiddoes! Maybe in 10 - 15 years you'll understand the issues being discussed.

*****Mr X rejects modern society. He sees popular culture as corrupt and decadent. Instead of watching television and eating at McDonalds, Mr. X reads classic literature and grows his own organic food. Instead of sending his children to public school, he teaches them at home so they will learn proper values.

Mr X is: *****

When the patterns emerge, what do we do?

I've noticed the same thing, with some accounts going back as far as 1999 suddenly coming to life with anti-conservative comments. Lots of weird games being played. Thanks for your research.

Well, by now I would have heard about massive quantities of civil servants keeling over dead from boredom.

"Oh, look, she's looking on Ebay for size 14 boy's clothes again!"

While I don't know the exact mechanics of it, there is HTTP code called referrer fields that allows a webmaster to see what web pages were last visited by a certain browser.

Link that particular browser to a particular name and you can see where an individual comes from with little trouble.

I could be wrong and if I am would someone please enlighten me.

I could almost hear LeRoy saying his patented line. "Prove your claim"

I'm sure you hear that a lot.
