My local radio station has already started playing songs like "White Christmas," "Merry Christmas Darling," "I'll be Home for Christmas," "Christmas Time is Here," and they call it, "Holiday music 24-hours a day." Holiday? What holiday? They are not playing Hanukkah songs, they are not playing Thanksgiving songs - they are playing Christmas music.

I feel sorry for the poor Salvation Army bell ringers who must now exhort you to have "happy holidays". I decided this year, that any time someoone tells me happy holiday, I'm going to give them a big smile and say "MERRY CHRISTMAS!"

What's almost as offensive as all this "Happy Holidays" nonsense is the fact that we're bombarded with it practically right after Halloween, and certainly right after Thanksgiving. So by the time Christmas finally rolls around, many folks are all burned out.

HISTORY LESSON:

When Jesus and his disciples walked the dusty roads of Israel, it was considered pagan (Ishtar Worship) to celebrate anyone's birthday.

And you can bet all you have that Jesus celebrated Chanukah every year! He also clebrated Passover Pentecost and Tabernacles because His Daddy had said to do it "forever." He was celebrating a Passover Seder when he said "As often as you do this, do it in remembrance of me."

Who commanded Christmas and Easter? And why is Easter named after a pagan goddess? Think about it before you defend "Christmas" too fiercely.

We have let this once Christian nation, NOT "Judeo-Christian, but Christian, become a "something" nation, probably starting sometime in the late sixties with the immigration quotas fair to every goddamned savage corner of the world. (Actually it was much earlier with the influx of the socialists and anarchists from the Central Europe, but we're not allowed to get into that, are we?)

Even though I'm Jewish, I make it a point to say "Merry Christmas." I figure that most people in the US are Christians of one sort or another, and I have only gotten two responses other than something along the lines of "Thanks, and a Merry Christmas to you too!" One was quite polite, where she said, "Thank you, but I'm Jewish... But you have yourself a very Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year." When I told her that I was Jewish too, we both had a laugh. The other was a sour old man who just gave me a nasty look.

So I'll continue saying "Merry Christmas!"

This whole attack on Christmas is one of the most frustrating aspects of political correctness....I want to scream every time I hear "happy holiday".

This is yet another example of how Americans behave like a conquered people. These sorts of things would not be possible (ie: using intimidation to successfully get most people to stop using the word "Christmas") if Middle America had a strong sense of the righteousness of its cultural identity. The ease with which most people go along with this PC facism is a measure of how low we have sunk as a people and a culture.

For a healthy people with a healthy cultural sense of their identity, this sort of taboo would be impossible to enact, as the vast majority of the people would ignore it and continue to use the traditional terminology.

I really don't think it's so awfull to acknowledge that some people celebrate different holidays. And even reading that much meaning into every utterance of "happy holidays" is a bit much. A lot of folks just like to roll Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years into one verbal package.

Can I play devil's advocate here without a flame out? Have we not brought this upon ourselves as Christians? Have we not lined up at the nearest Wal-Mart at dawn the day after Thanksgiving to get the best Christmas bargains with the rest of the screaming hoards? Have we not lighted our houses with enough lights that would bring in aircraft? Have we not had the biggest-tallest-greenest-pine-fir-evergreen-artificial tree wars? Have we not decorated our homes within an inch of mostly tacky, tasteless Christmas decorations? No space left untouched by latest have to have green-red-plaid-tinsel-flashing lights-ribbon-felt-tassle-paper-made Christmas clutter? I won't even begin on the out of control gift giving. We have brought it upon ourselves. We should be ashamed. Yes, I love the simplicity of Christmas, not the ghost of it's former self, it has become. Flame away.

I never noticed any "anti-Christmasism" in Texas the entire time I lived there. People said "Merry Christmas" to each other, Christmas music was referred to as CHRISTMAS music, and Christmas gifts were exchanged at school. In my group of friends, there was one practicing Jewish girl. I gave all of my friends gifts at Christmas, but I'd always theme hers for Hannukah. For example, one year I gave out bell necklaces. They came with red cords. I took the red cord off of hers and put a blue one on it. Another year I bought plastic containers shaped like Christmas trees and filled them with candy...but for her, I found a plastic container shaped like a dreidel. She was always appreciative that I acknowledged her Jewishness and never once complained that I was giving her a gift at Christmastime.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is I've never seen this anti-Christmasism and the response I've gotten from non-Christian friends and colleagues around Christmastime has been nothing but positive. I wish them a happy Hannukah/Ramadan/Diwali/what have you, and I get a Merry Christmas in return.
