Ask anyone under the age of 25 if they know who Walter Chronkite is for example. The press has a habit of making their own important, only to have the public develop generational amnesia: look at Winchell, Murrow, and so on. It must rankle to know that regardless of whatever fame you have, barring an early death you will be a mere journalistic boil on history's butt within your own lifetime.
As for Rather, maybe he has other opportunities. How's Castro's health these days?

Dan Rather is cool in a way.
I like how he limericks the news - his "Ratherisms" are priceless.

Dan Rather is cool in a way. Yep....I'd like him too if he wasn't such an idiot leftist.
And I mean that sincerely.

Not compelling TV, but I used to enjoy seeing Rather getting his ass kicked by a good hurricane every now and then.

Rather had me going when he expressed sincere sadness over 9/11 on the Letterman show. I thought for a brief moment...
But alas, he returned to his gnarly, baggy-eyed leftist self again.

Trouble is, Dan Rather is no better and no worse than any of the other talking heads. If he goes, they'll find someone just as bad to replace him. You can count on it.

CBS will probably hire Chris Lehane or Sidney Blumenthal to replace him.
They might consider stealing Georgie Stephanopolis from ABC but he's probably way too right wing for them.

Well, Murrow was a decent journalist. Not Rather.

with the exception of Paul Harvey...although he calls himself a commentator .... but i grew up listening to Paul Harvey and I still do. I just love the guy.

Rather had me going when he expressed sincere sadness over 9/11 on the Letterman show. Not me. Those were the fakest tears since Bill Clinton at Ron Brown's funeral.

Ask anyone under the age of 25 if they know who Walter Chronkite is for example.Excellent point. People are creatures of habit and the only people who watch the evening network news are those who were already watching back when there were only 3 channels to choose from.
And, of course, the march of time goes on biting into those numbers. RIP.
