NEVER FORGET
A Holiday Greeting from 'WE WERE SOLDIERS ONCE and YOUNG' Co-Author JOSEPH GALLOWAY:
Friends:
As we head into the holidays it is time to think of the airplanes which land every night at Andrews AB outside Washington carrying 12 to 15 wounded soldiers from Afghanistan and Iraq bound for Walter Reed Army Hospital.
Many are evacuated straight out of the field with no possessions. They need some of the smaller things to make life a little easier.
A list of what is needed and where to send it is attached.
GOD Bless Them.
JOE GALLOWAY
-----------------------------------------------------
The American Red Cross at Walter Reed is looking for incidentals/comfort items for sick and wounded Armed Forces Personnel now recuperating at the hospital. When someone stationed in Iraq, Afghanistan or elsewhere is wounded or falls ill, they're immediately evacuated and eventually end up stateside. It takes weeks for their personnnel effects to catch up with them.
Things that the Red Cross is asking for are:
telephone cares of at least 30 minutes / rolling luggage (small), totes, carry-ons / individually wrapped snacks / magazines / notepads, pens / playing cards and games / sweat pants and shirts (all sizes) /
All items should be addressed to:
ATTN: Barbara Green / Walter Reed Army Medical Center / 6900 Georgia Ave, N.W. / Washington, DC 20307-5001 /
Checks should be made out to the American Red Cross.
For more information, call (202) 782-2080 or e-mail Barbara.Green.1@AMEDD.army.mil

How did he get a Bronze Star?
By being the anti-Dan Rather.
And a lot more like Ernie Pyle.
(Other posters have given you the factual reasons for the award.)

Ragtime Cowgirl, the "How we can help" that looks like a link doesn't work (at least not on my PC).
Just letting you know if that's a good resource.

I bet 'Gunner can expedite them. Darn right I could.. I can work it so's we can take advantage of
my LTL discount rate and get 60% off. I'ts no trouble at all as I get
daily pickup at the dock from several major carriers and package carriers, too.
I envision the cards shipping on a small wrapped pallet, though.
I'd be most pleased to ship 'em.

A few gift suggestions from a guy who was medivac'ed once:
1) Radio's
2) Small TV's ( I recommend small 50 dollar jobbies that can be seen at bedside, or battery powered ones- Sams sells a good version)
3) Warm hospital robes
4) House-shoes
5) Tape players, CD's, casettes
6) Lots of moral support and love
Hope this helps...I'm putting together a package today

Gunner, I'd love to help, but I'm on a job in South Texas.
I can sure help with the expense, though!
Just tell me how much and where to send it!
Thanks, pard! HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!!
To: MJY1288
If you would send me your address via freepmail, I will send several calling cards for you to give to the guys. That way I know they will get them. Thanks

I just e-mailed my daughter, and made a copy for myself. This looks like a good project for her as one of the requirements on her way to the Gold Award! I'll talk to her about it tonight.
Is she supposed to contact the Red Cross before asking for donations of things?

Ain't nuthin' to it, sir.
You tell me where you want the cards to go, attention to whom,
and I'll get them from PetroniDE and ship 'em out, no worries.
I do this same thing a couple dozen times a day, no biggie.
Happy Thanksgiving to you!
I'll be in a trailer west of Menard trying to shoot some food
by day and botching the butchery & cooking by night.
The old man is a hard-ass.. says to bring food for 2 days.
I said we'd be there for 5 days, what if we don't shoot anything?
He said he was simply providing me with incentive.

That would be very nice of you and I will be glad to deliver them for you, be sure to send your return address just in case the soldiers want to say thanks

I think that would do it.
Let me know if I can help!

Let me know if I can help! You just did.
Do you reckon we ought to send the whole mess of cards or
save some back to distribute in Texas? Either way, consider it done and documented.

The box I picked up in Westlake had 320 decks in it.
I would think a couple of boxes like that would be sufficient.
Don't worry about sending too many, though. The lady from Harrah's said she'd get as many as we needed.

For our Veterans and Veterans to be......
A TRIBUTE
It is the VETERAN, not the preacher,
who has given us freedom of religion.
It is the VETERAN, not the reporter,
who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the VETERAN, not the poet,
who has given us freedom of speech.
It is the VETERAN, not the campus organizer,
who has given us freedom to assemble.
It is the VETERAN, not the lawyer,
who has given us the right to a fair trial.
It is the VETERAN, not the politician,
Who has given us the right to vote.
It is the VETERAN,
who salutes the Flag,
who serves under the Flag,
ETERNAL REST GRANT THEM O LORD,
AND LET PERPETUAL LIGHT SHINE UPON THEM.

Thank you, all. I am much moved even by the description of someone doing this; to read the book or see the movie is going to be overwhelming.
