..Holiday Appeal for Walter Reed Hospital Soldiers - JOE GALLOWAY
JOE GALLOWAY ^ | 11/26/2003 | JOE GALLOWAY

NEVER FORGET

A Holiday Greeting from 'WE WERE SOLDIERS ONCE and YOUNG' Co-Author JOSEPH GALLOWAY:

Friends:

As we head into the holidays it is time to think of the airplanes which land every night at Andrews AB outside Washington carrying 12 to 15 wounded soldiers from Afghanistan and Iraq bound for Walter Reed Army Hospital.

Many are evacuated straight out of the field with no possessions. They need some of the smaller things to make life a little easier.

A list of what is needed and where to send it is attached.

GOD Bless Them.

JOE GALLOWAY

-----------------------------------------------------

The American Red Cross at Walter Reed is looking for incidentals/comfort items for sick and wounded Armed Forces Personnel now recuperating at the hospital. When someone stationed in Iraq, Afghanistan or elsewhere is wounded or falls ill, they're immediately evacuated and eventually end up stateside. It takes weeks for their personnnel effects to catch up with them.

Things that the Red Cross is asking for are:

telephone cares of at least 30 minutes / rolling luggage (small), totes, carry-ons / individually wrapped snacks / magazines / notepads, pens / playing cards and games / sweat pants and shirts (all sizes) /

All items should be addressed to:

ATTN: Barbara Green / Walter Reed Army Medical Center / 6900 Georgia Ave, N.W. / Washington, DC 20307-5001 /

Checks should be made out to the American Red Cross.

For more information, call (202) 782-2080 or e-mail Barbara.Green.1@AMEDD.army.mil

Personally, I'm more than ready to see the Red Cross shut down. What a scam! They take and take, but don't seem to want to give. How many times do things like this have to happen before something is done?!!

See TNt post #178. Looks like the DC Chapter has some work to do here.

Senator Dole formerly headed the American Red Cross. I think she should get her staff to ask WTF.

Unbelievable that the RC would not get it in gear enough to pass out even the phone cards. Our boys deserve better than this. To those who are giving their time to the men & women at Walter Redd thank you!

This is shameful for this is happen to our precious guys and gals.

The RC sure doesn't mind digging in our pockets for money there will not be a donation from me.

Major clean out of the RC would be good thing.

Thanks for the ping.
I pinged the FAMPL list last night, have yet to hear what they think of it.
They're probably as miffed as I.
The Red Cross really should be shut down and used as a supply closet.

I agree that Red Cross performance has been sadly lacking. I was first alerted to it myself when victims following the OKC bombing caught them with the hand in the cookie jar. They would get letters which would refer to checks for that particular family, and there would be no check in the envelope. The Red Cross had thoughtfully taken it out to go into their general fund....or wherever.

My prayer was for the purpose of asking God to take command of the situation. The Red Cross used to be a very fine organization. If it can be fixed, then only God can do it. In the meantime, until there is an organization with integrity, I'm grateful for FReepers acting with determination to fill in the breech. Someone above suggested the Boy Scouts....wonder if that is a real possibility?

Sorry I don't have the time to do a larger ping - please pass this on.

I am going to MJY1288's autobody shop and pick up the phone cards, pens, pencils, paper, and am taking more of my Hostess pastry, chips and candy (I have a vending machine biz) and am going back to WR. I am going to visit as many wards as they will let me - making like Santa's helper!

I am going to find out Rick Diaz's address at the VA Hosp. in MN as several have asked for it - to make sure he gets phone cards so he can call family.

Second, I am going to the Red Cross room and I am going to volunteer. They don't know it but I am going to make it MY mission to visit the guys who don't have family or friends - and the charge Nurse for each ward knows who is getting visitors and who isn't - and I'm going to make sure that these guys and gals get Red Cross goodies brought TO them, by ME!!!

The traffic was awful going to and from Walter Reed yesterday - please pray for me and the traffic?? I DO have work I need to do for my business today, but am hoping to accomplish both.

Too bad to hear about the Red Cross not going out of their way to distribute the gifts.

My father always mistrusted the Red Cross. When he was in the Army during WWII he gave some money to the Red Cross to be delivered to his father who was in the hospital at the time. The Red Cross had made arrangements for whatever reason to deliver things from service members to their family members.

Only half of the money arrived. The Red Cross said they took the other half as a fee. That wasn't part of the "deal" and my father never forgot it and spoke ill of the Red Cross every chance he got.

For me, the fact that the head of the Red Cross gets at least 250,000 a year for a salary is enough to make me not donate to them. I can't believe they cannot find someone capable of doing the job without receiving a corporate salary.

Never Forget Bump.

Good heavens...I'm an Okie (left in 1995 for job in Los Angeles). I'd not heard of
these mis-deeds of the Red Cross in OKC.

Thanks for taking my comments on The Red Cross in the right way.
They need to get a loving nudge...then pressure needs to be stepped progressively until
they get the message.
At some point they will "feel the heat and thus see the light".

From many stories I've heard, you just would about need to get a lawyer to draw up
a contract in order to actually know what the Red Cross would do with a donation.
And even then I would expect them to bend/break the agreement in ways
that would make Bill Clinton look like a straight-shootin' moral paragon.

Forgive my gushing...but you are doing The Lord's Work.

A few years ago, the "Focus On The Family" radio show had an episode with an
interview of a Vietnam vet who'd been pretty well disfigured in combat
and his faithful wife...and they recounted their struggles to work through all their
challenges.

BUT, what I really got me was how the wife recounted the nurses preparing wives/fiances
before they met the most severly-disfigured men.
And about how sometimes the wife/fiance would rush out of the ward and throw a ring on
the floor.

I'm not saying this to judge the ladies in that sort of terrible circumstance...
...but the thought that the Red Cross, our guvmint, or other responsible parties
would let down the folks at WRAMC with something as simple as calling cards...
That just chaps my hide...in a very big way.

Senator Dole formerly headed the American Red Cross. I think she should get her staff to ask WTF.

Great suggestion...and maybe it can be made more effective...

1. Maybe someone here on the board knows some North Carolina freepers who can really
complain (as they are Libby Dole's constituents).

2. Maybe one of the D.C. Freepers visiting at WRAMC has met a North Carolinian recuperating
there. A letter/phonecall/e-mail directly from a North Carolinian to Libby about
the lackadaisical actions of The Red Cross might get some action.

Congressman Billy Bob, pardon the ping...
IIRC, you are in the western area of North Carolina.
Could you maybe spare a few minutes to check out posts 178, 212, and 218...
and give suggestions/comments?
Maybe you have some conduit to Senator Dole (former head of The Red Cross)...

Even if the Red Cross at Walter Reed has some sort of plausible excuse, it's a shame that
so many people answer the call for donations made by famed journalist Joe Galloway
and even tell us (via ALOHA RONNIE) that no further donations were needed (for now)...
and now to find the distribution effort at Walter Reed is apparently broken.

Thanks in advance!
