Prayers for him and his family.
You mentioned his employer...the employer should have some kind of insurance that covers the costs of returning him to the United States. This Repatriation coverage is usually maintained by those employers doing business outside of the United States.

Yes, of course I'll pray for him and his family. What a terrible tragedy. May the Lord be merciful.

How awful!
Dear Lord, we come before You, humbly asking that You be with this family and meet their every need. Bring healing and comfort to the son and give wisdom to the medical staff caring for him. Lord, let the parents know the peace that passes understanding. Strengthen them; give them rest; and send people to help them with their visa, transportation, and financial concerns. We give thanks that You do not allow us to suffer alone but are always with us, carrying us through the valleys. Amen.

pax, I don't have ANY information that would help them. I certainly WILL pray for them, though.

Prayers sent. Though I agree much of the staffs of US embassies can be complete jerks, it is nevertheless the first place to try to get help concerning an extension on the mother's emergency visa. They can work with the Costa Rican authorities, and friendly countries, faced with such situations, are usually willing to cut through the red tape.
For some incentive for the US embassy people to do their duty, calls to your Senators and congresscriters' staff might not be remiss.

It's unbelieveable, the kinds of things which happen in this world.
Many prayers for this man and his family. I can't imagine how frantic I would be.
