Protesters turn on Jesse Jackson during rally
ABC 7 Chicago ^ | November 25, 2003 | Rob Johnson

A Loop rally demanding more jobs for young black men turned into a protest against the leadership of Reverend Jesse Jackson.

With roughly 100,000 Chicagoans between 16 and 24 out of work or not in school, Rainbow Push was hoping to call to action disenfranchised young people, but a group of people disenchanted with Jesse Jackson led a spirited protest that sometimes drowned out the message of more jobs.

Hundreds converged upon a frigid Federal Plaza today to hear politicians and political candidates talk passionately about creating more jobs.

"Since this is a union working town the unions need to provide job training and set up a trade school in the city of Chicago," said Sen. James Meeks, 15th District.

However some of the speakers were quickly drowned out by boos, bullhorns, and verbal jabs from a group called VOTE, ex-offenders, community activists, church leaders, and Muslims, tired of what they call the rhetoric in the African-American community.

"We are tired of coming here to voice our opinion when we got African-American people sitting at the table and saying they represent our interests and playing this puppet game," said one protester.

Afterwards ABC7's Rob Johnson asked Reverend Jackson why he felt like so much verbal venom was aimed in his direction.

"They lashed out at Dr. King, they lashed out at Nelson Mandela, they lashed out at Jesus, so all of those who fight for change become the object of frustration," said Rev. Jesse Jackson, Rainbow-Push Coalition.

"What has he sacrificed for his beliefs? Us. We've been sacrificed. On the altar of his political ambition our people have been destroyed," said John Johnson, VOTE.

Rob Johnson: Does this distract from the message you're trying to put forth today?

Jesse Jackson: It distracts from the message but it shows the pain.

The group "VOTE" is frustrated because it says not enough job training programs have been offered to those who need them the most. But despite the contentious afternoon at Federal Plaza Reverend Jackson says he will continue to make sure jobs are more readily available.

The guy is delusional. Those who love him should encourage him to retire-- the sooner, the better-- for his own sake. The rest of us need the relief.

They don't need no damn training. Just do like everyone else does. Find a job. Show up to work on time everyday, and there ya' go. You started a career.

Sheesh! They need training or they can't work??

However, it's nice to see them realizing they're getting no help from the fraud Jackson.

Somebody help me here. The crowd consisted of young men 16 - 24. Some wanted schooling. Well, if they're 16-18/19, can't they just go back to high school? Doesn't the city offer GED classes if people can't hack the regular program?

They want job training? You can't tell me that Chicago isn't full of proprietary schools offering training in everything from culinary arts to truck driving to massage therapy. The community colleges offer a ton of job-oriented programs.

What stops these people from opening the phone book, picking a school and a program and getting the training they want??? Why do they need the gubmint to hold their hands? (rhetorical question. we know why.)

I'm getting pretty sick of black people (and I'm one so I guess I can say this) crying 'poor me' without doing anything themselves to change the situation.

Jesse, fearing that someone might throw a ripe vegetable that might spatter on his $3,000 suit or his $800 shoes, got in his limousine and had his chauffeur drive him to his town house for a light sherry and some chilled caviar. He returned to the demonstration just after the stock market closed.

"Rev Jackson NEEDS to get a REAL job!"

Jesse's job is anti-social security. He has drawn on it all of his life, but contributed nothing to it.

. The only way to create real opportunity is to promote education.

Incomplete!

The best way to seize an opportunity is to be ready for it when it comes along.

Education is free through the 12th grade and anybody who drops out before earning a high school degree will not be ready when the opportunity comes along........and it will.

Democrats love failure. They feed off misery.

This from the same hypocrite who showed up in Washington as Bill Clinton's spiritual advisor during Monica-gate...with his own mistress, pregnant no less....is now comparing himself with Jesus.
Could this guy's conscience become anymore severed from reality?

uh huh. Jessie -you are no MLK , or Jesus and I guess the people you say you represent are tired of you pretending you are.

From Marin Luther King's mouth to Jessie's ear. Your, sir did not hear his dream... you are his nightmare. You may have marched with him but you were not listening. Freedom is not segregation. Stop segregating these people and let them free Jessie.

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal." I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slaveowners will be able to sit down together at a table of brotherhood. I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a desert state, sweltering with the heat of injustice and oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice. I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today. Martin Luther King I have a dream speech.

Hey, at least this shows interest into eventually getting a job. They could be demanding more welfare. Any time a group of Blacks in a large city have the audacity to challenge Jackson out in the open, we know that progress is being made.

And Jesse helps the Mexicans in many, many ways.

Why sure. Jesus was just a guy who, like Jesse, was "fighting for change".

Help me, somebody; my eyes rolled up too far into my head, and now they're stuck.

What happened to the expensive government schools that were susposed to train these young men? It seems that the PC affirmative action, outcome based education they got qualified them for a job as "government dependent", and business and industry don't need any of those. Perhaps these young men have started to understand that Jesse gets the money and they get on their knees to vote DemoRat the rest of their lives. Who would'a thunk it?
