California Senate has voted to repeal SB 60! (Drivers' Licenses for Illegals Being REPEALED Now!)
Posted on 11/24/2003 4:34:03 PM PST by ElkGroveDan
The California Senat is now voting on SB 1XXX by Senator Rico Oller to repeal SB 60, the dirvers license of illegal aliens bill.
Reports are that the Democrats have been scared into supporting this. The recall exit polls showed it was the number one issue.

Keep those self-gratifying posts coming fella.
If by "self gratifying, you meant the ones for which you have no answer, OK... Schwarzenegger has criticized the way the law was passed and said he wants a new law that ties the licenses to insurance and background checks. The law's author, Sen. Gil Cedillo, D-Los Angeles, urged his colleagues to repeal it in the face of widespread public opposition. Though Cedillo stood by his long fight to let 2 million residents living illegally in California get licenses without providing Social Security numbers, he pledged to work with new Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger next year to find middle ground. "This is not easy," a shaken Cedillo told his colleagues before the vote to overturn the law before it takes effect Jan. 1. Only weeks earlier as Schwarzenegger had included a repeal of the law among the objectives of his first 100 days, Cedillo had vowed it would not happen. "I ask because I have had some time with the governor," he said on the Senate floor Monday, asking for a two-thirds majority to repeal the law and start over. "I believe him. I trust him. I believe he has articulated a matter in which we can resolve concerns of mutual interest." San Francisco Chronicle - November 24th, 2003
Cedillo believes Schwarzenegger. I believe Schwarznegger. Do you?

The only reason that they voted to repeal it is that they can't afford to have the Referendum go to the ballot and get trounced where they wouldn't dare introduce and new milder illegal licence law that your friend Arnold would sign.
The Governor has been clear from the start that he opposes drivers licenses for illegal aliens. Anyone promotion a different notion is simply slandering him.

So does this take the referendum off the table or what? I actually hope not. As for the Governor, KCBQ's Mark Larson said it best: we do need to hold Schwarzenegger's feet to the fire on this and many of the social issues as well. This is potentially dangerous. The last thing we need is another 9/11.

I don't discount the role the governor played in this. I am just stating reality when I say the legislature would not have repealed this if there wasn't a referendum hanging over their heads.
Perhaps you overlooked the facts stated in the article. The reason this is being repealed is because the Governor ran on this issue and it was the #1 issue for those that went to the polls in October.

Kept his word on SB60!
He's at least 2 for 2 between this and the car tax you. The Arnold haters are going to have to find their own terminator. This one belongs to the right people!
To: ElkGroveDan
Though this is a good step, you don't think this is just the Dems' way to side-step the refferendum, put in the "security provisions" and shove it back down our throats? This time with the Governator's support?

There was less than overwhelming support on Democratic Underpants for the Illegals having licenses...

If CA could repeal this kind of law, then I hope the other 14 states that give driver's licenses to illegals would follow suit.

Your interpretations of his comments and predictions of events have garnered you 0.000% so far. Nice batting average BTW. Frankly it's getting old. You harp on this inceasantly. When Schwarzenegger takes some action you don't like, please tell us about it. Until then, STFU.
If you have some specific thing you know he's working on, I'll join you in opposing it. Otherwise this is just a waste of time.
We've seen your posts hundreds if not thousands of times by now. None of what you have predicted has panned out and a few things you said would never happen have.
Until the next Sabertoothless data dump, this is D1 leaving the topic.

I despise career politicians like this anywayCedillo is not a career politician. He was a laborer, then a lawyer, then a union president and now a politician.
His lawyering was for the ACLU representing immigrants rights and soon after he presided over the largest, foreign union in the US. Although it was only a local it was, and still is, the largest union local in the US controlled by foreign nationals, the service workers union in Los Angeles. The maids and janitors for many of the hotels and commercial buildings in LA, including City Hall and the Parker Center.

Thanks for the ping.
I too suspect some noxious "deal" may be in the works ... but perhaps it's nothing more than Arnold's agreeing NOT to use his bully pulpit against "them" if they were to refuse repeal.

"His lawyering was for the ACLU..."
...Ugh! That's twice as bad as being a career politician. I have an uncle who likens the ACLU to being lawyers for Satan. Sounds like this guy was entrenched from day one.

He's the eternal optimist. Wish some of it would rub off on some of the malcontents on this forum.
"Malcontents?" You went for the "M-word?" Pretty dicey, for you. Let's play a game: Two Questions.
1. Did you vote for President Bush in 2000? 2. If the 2004 Election were held today, would you vote for President Bush?
I've got a pair of "yesses." How about you? Do you even have one? "Malcontents" indeed. You aren't well-positioned for that kind of posturing.

That effort is not wasted though ... you can use it for a grassroots effort network to FLOOD the legislators and tell them not to pander to the illegals.

Repealing SB 60 is just the tip of the iceberg. There are plenty of other pro-illegal policies in place such as in-state college tuition for illegals and state agencies accepting the Matricular Consular card as a valid form of ID. I wonder where does Arnold stand on those issues?

Coincidence -
The SaveOurLicense Petitions are just over the top.
I take it this is a way now for Cidillo to steal the attention from the popular movement to fix the problem with elected representatives.
