In an 1862 lithograph, a slave is depicted fleeing
toward Canada before the Civil War.
VANCOUVER, British Columbia Heaven was the word for Canada and the Negro sang of the hope that his escape on the Underground Railroad would carry him there," the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once noted in describing the codes American slaves used in their spirituals to fool their masters before taking flight.
Canada is heaven again for Lance W. Bateman and William E. Woods, two American men who were married here recently.
The wedding on Aug. 31 looked like a typical Hawaiian wedding, with the grooms wearing tropical ceremonial shirts made of pineapple fiber woven to look like fine silk and every guest wearing at least one orchid lei. Except the affair was in Canada, because the two men could not legally be married in Hawaii, where they live and to which they have returned.
As untraditional as the affair might seem, the men were actually following a long tradition of Americans coming here to break the conventions of the day, do something illegal, or simply live as they wished. The tradition goes back to the American Revolution, when 30,000 Loyalists flooded into Ontario and Nova Scotia to remain in the paternal embrace of King George III.
Mr. Woods, a 54-year-old public health administrator, and other gay-rights advocates are campaigning to encourage American gay couples to marry in Canada and then take their Canadian marriage licenses back home to press for the kind of pension, medical and other benefits that heterosexual married couples

Poor equivalency argument. Of course it's not designed to be anything so rational as an argument. The typical government school grad of today wouldn't know a logical argument if it bit him. But he is well-tuned to be sensitive to political associations trumped up by the media elites...
The contemporary era is one of feelings, not thoughts. That won't change until we all toss out the TVs and discipline ourselves and our families to regularly read good books.

The Times continues to disappoint me, I opened this thread fully expecting to read of hot, steamy sex in a boxcar full of runaway young bucks rutting their way to colder climes.
I'll return as soon as Jim lets me out.

I want to point out that in no State are gays prohibited from getting married. In fact, gays can marry each other. However, they just can't marry someone of the same sex. There is no prohibition against gay marriage - just same sex marriage. Excellent point. We should bring it up whenever the issue is raised.

The Gays = Blacks in the Civil Rights struggle has been a long-time argument for the Gay activists ...
The Liberal Press is trying it on the rest of America.
Just today, Derrick Jackson praised the faulty Mass ruling in those terms, gong back to rulings that legalized interracial marriage.
Anyone who thinks homosexuality is immoral is just a hateful bigot.
If you dissent? You will be marginalized, shunned or absorbed.

JESUS DEFINES MARRIAGE: "And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? Wherefore, they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder." -from THE BIBLE: Matthew 19:4-6

"political associations trumped up by the media elites..."
That is a good point - the mind works through association...
bigotry does too. bigotry is just the association of a group/class with a set of characteristics - judging a book by its cover.
here they judge a movement of set of people by analogy with another group. Same kind of associative thinking. So they use the same mind-trick that bigots do to push their own agenda which they claim is against bigotry! Ironic!

Downside: there goes Broadway musicals and opera in the USA
(no flames...I know even straight males can like musicals, like columnist
Mark Steyn, sp?)
Upside: Fewer crappy situation comedies with gay-friendly obsessions?

AIDS: The Agony of Africa
http://www.villagevoice.com/issues/9948/schoofs.php Part Five: Death and the Second Sex
By Mark Schoofs
December 1-7, 1999
Harare, Zimbabwe and Nigeri Village, Kenya -- Sipewe Mhakeni used herbs from the Mugugudhu tree. After grinding the stem and leaf, she would mix just a pinch of the sand-colored powder with water, wrap it in a bit of nylon stocking, and insert it into her vagina for 10 to 15 minutes. The herbs swell the soft tissues of the vagina, make it hot, and dry it out. That made sex "very painful," says Mhakeni. But, she adds, "Our African husbands enjoy sex with a dry vagina."
Many women concur that dry sex, as this practice is called, hurts. Yet it is common throughout southern Africa, where the AIDS epidemic is worse than anywhere in the world. Researchers conducting a study in Zimbabwe, where Mhakeni lives, had trouble finding a control group of women who did not engage in some form of the practice. Some women dry out their vaginas with mutendo wegudo -- soil with baboon urine -- that they obtain from traditional healers, while others use detergents, salt, cotton, or shredded newspaper. Research shows that dry sex causes vaginal lacerations and suppresses the vagina's natural bacteria, both of which increase the likelihood of HIV infection. And some AIDS workers believe the extra friction makes condoms tear more easily.

This is an issue no Christian need feel guilty about opposing. The Bible states explicitly God's view of homosexuality, and all the oogy, kumbaya talk in the world won't change the fact that it is an abomination before the Almighty. It doesn't mean we have to hate. It doesn't mean we have any right to hurt or injure homosexuals. It just means that we're under no moral obligation to accept their abhorrent behavior, nor to lend it our collective sanction.
It is a perfect wedge issue for the dialectical Left, since accepting homosexuality destroys the traditional notion of marriage and family and opposing it causes an ideological tension that can erupt into violence, which can also be used to destroy the status quo.
Marx would be proud.

it's not designed to be anything so rational as an argument. Absolutely right. It is a transparent attempt to link the image of something abominable -- slavery -- with something perfectly normal -- opposition to homosexuality. If the average pro-hetero can be turned into Simon Legree, it makes every queer a sympathetic soul.
I don't know that God had much to say about slavery, but He makes it pretty clear where He stands on homosexuality.
