Actually, gloves have enjoyed a little bit of a comeback recently. It will never be anthing like before but you do see them from time to time.

I read this is the first time a US President has been personally invited by the Queen rather than the UK government to visit. She must have at least liked him enough to do this. It sounds like a special honour for W imho.

He also was wearing boots that said God Bless the Queen. I think he told her about them.

....Oh my, the color of Laura's dress is just gorgeous; so rich, befitting a dinner with the Queen.....

Remember when Willard the Beast and the Spawn visited with the queen. Wasn't it jeans, a pantsuit, and slacks??

What an outstanding dress the First Lady is wearing.

And the President looks sooo good, too.

Thanks for linking that picture.

Yes, indeed. Frankly, I think if the truth be known that is probably one of the reasons the press got so lathered up about this visit... This prestigous invitation was extended to President Bush but not to Bubba.

Just a little gentle humor on my part. I admire the Lady greatly.

I do, too.

I was thinking about if Lady Thatcher had been there... I'd consider her to be the elder of the whole group. What a loss.

Ah ha, I was right. She has her glasses on, so it must be just a few tissues in her purse. LOL

The banners the women and some of the men are wearing are their traditional "arms" indicating their status as royalty and the crests of the different orders they belong to.

You may be right.

One of the surprising results of 9/11 and its aftermath was the support W got from Tony Blair. Tony Blair is the leader of the socialist Labour party. The natural position one would have expected him to take would have been with all the anti-war anti-american leftwing partys all over the world. In the immediate aftermath of 9/11 the Queen ordered her marching band in front of the palace to play the Star Spangled banner which was unprecedented. The flying of the US flag. Also unprecedented. And then the special memorial service at St. Pauls cathedral which the Queen and Blair attended.

I'm not saying the Queen can order her PM to adopt a policy. She is supposed to be above politics in theory. However it would not surprise me that she had a VERY strong influence on how Blair would deal with the US after 9/11. It would have been very interesting to have been a fly on the wall during her chats with Blair after 9/11 She is not without influence and background power and now 50+ years on the throne and dealing daily with PMs all through that time would definitely give her a strong hand. Like someone said she was a military mechanic in WW II and is clearly not someone who has forgotten what the US did during that time. It seems France and Germany have.
