Are You a Liberal?

It is my belief that about half of the Americans who call themselves liberal do not hold the great majority of positions held by mainstream liberal institutions such as the New York Times editorial page, People for the American Way, and the liberal wing of the Democratic Party. So here is a test of this thesis to be given to anyone who believes he or she is a liberal. If you feel I have omitted a liberal position or have unfairly characterized any of them here, please e-mail me. This is still a work in progress.

You say you are a liberal.

Do you believe the following?

1. Standards for admissions to universities, fire departments, etc. should be lowered for people of color.

2. Bilingual education for children of immigrants, rather than immersion in English, is good for them and for America.

3. Murderers should never be put to death.

4. During the Cold War, America should have adopted a nuclear arms freeze.

5. Colleges should not allow ROTC programs.

6. It was wrong to wage war against Saddam Hussein in the Gulf War.

7. Poor parents should not be allowed to have vouchers to send their children to private schools.

8. It is good that trial lawyers and teachers unions are the two biggest contributors to the Democratic Party.

9. Marriage should be redefined from male-female to any two people.

10. A married couple should not have more of a right to adopt a child than two men or two women.

11. The Boy Scouts should not be allowed to use parks or any other public places and should be prohibited from using churches and synagogues for their meetings.

12. The present high tax rates are good.

13. Speech codes on college campuses are good and American values.

14. The Israelis and Palestinians are morally equivalent.

15. The United Nations is a moral force for good in the world, and therefore America should be subservient to it and such international institutions as a world court.

16. It is good that colleges have dropped hundreds of men's sports teams in order to meet gender-based quotas.

17. No abortions can be labeled immoral.

18. Restaurants should be prohibited by law from allowing customers to choose between a smoking and a non-smoking section.

19. High schools should make condoms available to students and teach them how to use them.

20. Racial profiling for terrorists is wrong -- a white American grandmother should as likely be searched as a Saudi young male.

21. Racism and poverty -- not a lack of fathers and a crisis of values -- are the primary causes of violent crime in the inner city.

22. It is wrong and unconstitutional for students to be told, "God bless you" at their graduation.

23. No culture is morally superior to any other.

Those are all liberal positions. How many of them do you hold

Vouchers and the death penalty are the only two that are even debatable.

I think most of the 18% of Americans who call theselves liberal do believe in most of these. I don't think they are liberal positions though. They are radical leftist positions. Radical leftists have no real foundation in classic liberalism.

Must be a test for moderate liberals. A real liberal believes that a 100% tax rate is reasonable if the person makes too much.

Most liberals I know blame Israelis much more than Palestinians. They see the Jews as the big powerful oppressor and have much more sympathy for the poor Palestinians.

Zero, with a possible exception regarding the ending of men's sports teams. Given the performance of my alma mater's football team in recent years, I think it would be merciful to let it die a quiet death.

You believe the word "people" in the first, fourth, and ninth amendments to the Constitution refer to individuals, but the word "people" in the second amendment refers to the National Guard.

You would rather see a woman strangled with her own panties than "allow" her to effectively defend herself.

I believe the following were called "Joe 6-Pack's Questions for liberals"

• If, conceding the liberal argument, homosexuality is a genetic predisposition, and a test becomes available to let expectant mothers know if their, "fetus," is predisposed to homosexuality, should that mother be allowed to abort the "fetus," on that basis?
  If she would abort a "homosexual fetus," does that constitute a "hate crime?"
  Does preventing her from doing so impose on a woman's right to choose?
  
  
• If we were not meant to eat animals, why are they made out of meat?
  
  
• Suppose you and one other person were shipwrecked on a desert island, not under the jurisdictional law of any state and country.
  Is it morally right for that person to kill you, or you to kill that person to stretch the food supply?
  If not, what makes it morally wrong?
  
  
• If sexual activity of any sort is "ok," provided it is between consenting adults, does this include incest between children over 18 and their parents? If not, why? 17? 16? 15? 14?
  
  
• If the government can arbitrarily set the minimum wage at $5.35 an hour, why not set it at $200.00 an hour? Wouldn't this improve the lot of the poor and lower working class?
  To what degree should the employer be able to determine the value of labor?
  
  
• If you over-paid a shop owner $20.00 for a new carpet cleaner, would you not expect a refund or credit?
  Would you consider it theft if the business kept the overpayment without refunding or crediting you?
  Does not, an anticipated multi-billion dollar surplus indicate an overpayment on the part of the American taxpayer?
  
  
• If your 23-year old daughter had an internship with a major corporation, and had spent her summer on her knees, under the desk of the married CEO, would you demand his resignation, or support his retention because he had been a "good," CEO?
  
  
• Is it truly and logically possible to be governed by our consent without ultimately being given the resort of arms?
  How is it possible that a human can honestly and legitimately consent without owning the means to refuse?
  
  
• What paragraph(s) of the Constitution outline the responsibilities of the Department of Education?
  
  
• If we, as a nation and political system have no moral superiority over nations and governments, why do we spend money on maintaining
  memorials to those that have died in order to preserve and spread our way of life?
  Should we no longer fund these projects?
  
  
• If reparations for past wrongs can be demanded by the descendants of the victims from the descendants of the perpetrators, should native Americans be named as defendants in law suits against the tobacco industry? If, as many Afro-centrist scholars contend, Ancient Egyptian Civilization was the product of black africans, are not the Israelite slaves who built the pyramids owed reparations?
  
  
• If one maintains that Darwinian evolutionary theory should be taught as fact, and at the exclusion of all other theories in public schools, one must subscribe to the notion of "survival of the fittest." If one believes that, "survival of the fittest," is a natural, evolutionary process, does the Endangered Species Act set a dangerous precedent in man's interference with nature? Wouldn't the artificially protracted preservation of a species destined for extinction result in an ecological catastrophe?
  
  
• If you knew for a fact that a person was HIV positive, would you allow your teen-ager to have sexual intercourse with that person if they promised to use a condom they got from the school nurse.
