Statement by the President On Marriage

November 18, 2003

STATEMENT BY THE PRESIDENT

Marriage is a sacred institution between a man and a woman. Today's decision of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court violates this important principle. I will work with congressional leaders and others to do what is legally necessary to defend the sanctity of marriage.

I noticed that same hypocricy -- the RATs are only States Rights people when it fits their agenda.

"In his Symposium, Plato suggests that mankind was originally made up of complete beings. Mankind originally had three genders that were a fusion of two human bodies. "Some were male-male, some were female-female, and some were male-female. These beings were round, had two faces, had four arms, and reproduced asexually. These beings were complete, incredibly happy, and even arrogant. This angered the gods who were incredibly jealous. The gods split these beings in half, which is the present state of mankind. We all search for our other half in hopes of becoming whole again."

Plato doesn't "suggest" this; the poet Aristophanes suggests it.

Marriage can only be between a man and a woman ~ Period!

Almost makes you think we need to send the MA Supreme Court the definition of what is a man and a woman!

That's a very good point -- return Roe vs. Wade to the States where it belonged. The RATs want it both ways!

I was impressed with Romney stepping up and condemning this ruling by the MA Supreme Court. Was a breath of fresh air for people of MA that are on the RIGHT!

God bless President Bush. He speaks from his heart and his gut. It's also a great opportunity to talk about judges legislating from the bench and about why he is nominating people that will not do that. Hope he takes the opportunity.

And yes, the RATS are such hypocrits...if only the media would point this out...yeah, right.

"I agree with 3,000 years of recorded history. I disagree with the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts," Republican Gov. Mitt Romney said. "Marriage is an institution between a man and a woman ... and our constitution and laws should reflect that."

Mitt's even more to the point than the President. Good for Mitt.

My hope is that disagreements over this issue can be handled with tolerance and understanding.

Yeah, right! If you disagree, you'll be labeled a bigot and homophobe and treated as the scourge of society by these people in the blink of an eye. Oh, wait, I forgot. Tolerance is a one-way street. Never mind.

If gays want a religious cermony, which the church might refuse based upon their doctrines, there will be lawsuits. If a church refuses to marry gays based upon their doctrines, the state will step in and rule on their decision based upon their constitutional laws. And it will be ruled in favor of gays, because the state constitution says so.

As bad as this is, it isn't quite as bad as you paint the picture, for several reasons.

First of all, there really isn't any "right" to marriage, even for heterosexuals. Since an inalienable right includes an obligation on all other human beings to honor that right, you can see that this particular "right" - along with all the other socialist "rights" - is no right at all. While I may very well have the "right" to marry the woman of my choice, there is no woman anywhere in the world who is obligated to marry me.

Secondly, churches are voluntary associations of like-minded people, which both accept new members and remove old members all the time, and for their own reasons. In this country you have the right to worship as you wish, but no church is obligated to accept you as a member of its association, nor can it keep you in membership if you choose to leave, for that matter.

And therefore, a "right" to marriage is not at the same time a "right" to a church wedding, since civil authority in all jurisdictions also conducts wedding ceremonies.

Granted, all these points may be contested in various courts of law, and in some jurisdictions with courts which disregard the US Constitution as a matter of course, the church may "lose". Should that come to pass, however, I predict that those churches which are against homosexual marriages (and there are many more of them than there are for such nonsense) will simply disband and re-form at a later date. If the homosexual lobby wants to waste its money in such a never-ending spiral of fruitless (no pun intended) lawsuits, they're not only venal and corrupt, they're stupid.

Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., said the decision was a "welcome new milestone on the road to full civil rights for all our citizens.

"It's wrong for any state to discriminate against gays and lesbians by denying them the many benefits and protections that the laws of the state provide for married couples," Kennedy said.

"They are, after all," Senator Kennedy concluded, "just a bunch of Neanderthals and we should respect them as such."

As a matter of fact one does not have to have a license to "marry" since two persons who cohabit for a period of time are married in a sense. The license is merely a first step toward formalization of that relationship and is in effect a declaration by the two parties that neither is already married.
