As a matter of fact one does not have to have a license to "marry" since two persons who cohabit for a period of time are married in a sense. The license is merely a first step toward formalization of that relationship and is in effect a declaration by the two parties that neither is already married.

It depends on the state you are in. In many states, regardles of the amount of time you live together you are not married.

The common term is "common law marriage." The license is a society keeping track of children and inheritance. (for isses like widowers/widows shares of estate required by laws)

Common law marriages aren't recognized in all states.
