I lay awake in bed for three hours straight this Thursday, panicking that I have become way too choosy when it comes to blind dates. After all, isn't New York full of lonely women in their 30s who think no one is good enough?

I had a similar experience on a date with an airhead liberal in early 2002. I had no idea of her views and opinions before agreeing to go out with her (I was set up with her by a court reporter our law firm used; when he provided links to pictures of some of her beauty pageant pictures, I readily agreed to meet her).

Shortly after she got in my car, she started talking about politics. I really didn't want to discuss it that quickly after meeting her, but she seemed insistent. Once I told her what I thought of the National Endowment for the Arts, everything broke down; it turned out she was attending college on a partial scholarship sponsorsed by said organization. Good times did not follow.

How do you respond to my query re: "Oak and fern bars?"

For starters I was always perplexed by the statement that you don’t or can’t meet good women in a bar because you got to figure that young and single people go to bars, So even if you meet a women somewhere else the odds are she was recently at a bar so what’s the difference?

The fern bars and dance clubs, Forget it, I know people do meet people but I don’t know how when the music is so loud that you can’t talk to the person in front you without screaming in their ear.

As for Oak bars, I’m not exactly sure of the term I assume you mean town bars that aren’t clubs but aren’t dives either (Dives you just go to get hammered and play pool). The chains like TGI Fridays and Hollihans forget about it, They are the same everywhere with the same shallow people, The woman who wrote this article is the type that hangs out in those. The regular “nice” town bar is probably the best providing there is a variety of people and not the same “townies” over and over again.

Though it’s very hard to go directly up to a girl and meet her at a bar, Because girls (well the ones worth meeting) don’t go to bars alone and when they are in groups is hard to break through the defensive line they put up to get to the one you want, Even if there is just 2 of them it’s hard unless you have a good wingman. I swear that when women don’t have boyfriends they become each others acting boyfriend and I don’t mean in a lesbian way but an overly protective way, Mainly because they are afraid to be single by themselves so they become overly critical of and try to sabotage any guy who is after their friend.

Actually the best way to meet women I’ve found if you are going to a bar is to avoid groups of girls that are there together alone and find women who came there with a group of guys (By that I of course mean they are there as a group not as couples) and first make friends with the guys they are with and after awhile let them introduce you to the women they are with. This way the woman will be a little more trusting toward you and you can get a good feel for the type of women she/they are by the guy friends she hangs out with, if the guys are shallow and dumb then the girls they hang out with are most likely shallow and dumb, If they guys are pot smoking hippie wannabees than the girls probably are to -etc. Plus they can sort out who has a boyfriend, who’s psychotic, etc.

Then again, I’m 33 and still single so I might be totally wrong.

That stereotype is untrue in the South. Lots of very attractive women go to church regularly and they don't dress like "church lady".

My wife attends a PCA church here that has a large Vandy outreach. I'd wager at least half the girls are minimally cute or better some are absolutely stunning and sweet as all getout.. There is also a large under 40 single women contingent that is full of attractive well kept women.

I'm too old and married to look except with extreme caution but of course I notice when I go and I'll confess it's easier to go to church with babes than uglee gals....lol

One doesn't go to church to chase women obviously but you might be apt to find a more grounded traditional chick if looking for the real thing and you could get some spiritual nourishment if you are open to it.

Boy,lots of folks really have a hollywood image of church and staid chicks in dresses to their ankles and hair bunned up and no make up...and dour faces....that is so opposite from the reality. Think ...happy looking attractive young women who take some pride in looking good and fashionable but not slutty.

I have four and they are loving friends. I found my oldest one in the crib, my baby still sleeps in the bassinet, and needless to say I kicked his ass right out and now keep the door to the baby's room shut!
