MINNEAPOLIS: Maryland ex-chief is reportedly up for top police post (Moose Alert)

Former Montgomery County, Md., Police Chief Charles Moose, who often spoke for the law enforcement community during the investigation of last year's Washington-area sniper attacks, has applied to be the next police chief in Minneapolis, the Star Tribune reported Saturday.

The Minneapolis-based newspaper said unidentified sources confirmed Moose was one of 26 applicants.

Moose's wife, Sandy, told the Associated Press from her Maryland home Saturday the family had no comment and said her husband was unavailable. A spokeswoman for Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak told the AP he is prohibited by law from disclosing the names of applicants until finalists are selected.

Moose, 50, was a keynote speaker at an Oct. 31 terrorism symposium in Anoka, and he hinted at a news conference he was looking for a new chief's job if the right opportunity presented itself.

Police and county officials who know Moose say he is highly regarded for his leadership skills and ability to communicate with the public. He resigned as Montgomery County chief in June to write a book about the manhunt for the snipers who killed 10 people.

The list of applicants for the Minneapolis chief's job isn't public, but several internal candidates have confirmed that they applied.

Current Chief Robert Olson's contract will expire in January, and Rybak has said he won't renew it.

The city expects to interview finalists on Dec. 13-14 and to extend an offer before the holidays, said Rybak's spokeswoman, Laura Sether.

Moose worked in Portland, Ore., from 1975 to 1999 and was chief for the last six of those years. After Portland, he went to Montgomery County, which has 1,100 sworn officers. Minneapolis has about 810.

Minneapolis seems to make the worst choices in leadership. Do you remember Police Chief Tony Bouza and his famous last words, "there are no gangs in Mpls"......

What city would be dumb enough to hire such an obvious flake? The guy quit his job for a fast buck, and he'd do it again in a heartbeat. Most of the guys who worked for him can't even stand him.

If that's the case, Arm thyself neighbor...

I thought we here in Kalifornicate were in worse shape..

Until the recent successful recall election here and the expulsion of Gray Davis and his band of thieves and Marxists - I thought my next "ballots" would have to be cast from the rooftops in the prone position.....

I can just see the Mayor when he saw the application........

Mayor: "OK HaHa very funny people but this is no place to be making fun of....uh what? This isn't a joke?"

"(under his breath) I'm glad there's 25 other applicants to chose from."
